i think i will avoid iphone/ipad streaming for battery , 16/44,1 max and weak GB storage and that i will go for a win7 HTPC that will use sleep mode. Never mind if it boots in 30s, i guess there is no win7 pc booting in 10sec.

Thanks Diogenis mac mini is booting in more than 30 sec no ? i'd really like something up & running from power off to media playing similar to audio component...around 10 or 15sec another way to have

Hi y'all, about a year after the last post and reading about CAPS and CAPS-like articles, i've arrived at the rationale that I would want a DVD/blu-ray/mp4 capability on my future music server. I guess my only criteria are now: - booting time about 15-20 sec (from no electric power) - use apple remote on iphone/ipad - audio to usb (for dacmagic) - flac, alac, mp4, avi,...no need of 24/192 as the fujitsu q900 is about to be out, would you see it to be the good option ? (http://www.htpcreviews.org/fujitsu-launches-esprimo-q900-mini-pc) i'd put the OS on SSD many thanks to all for a great site

Eloise, Idolse, I forgot to ask you in how many seconds do your homemade linux or win server switch on ? I guess the Squeezebox Touch should play music in less than 10 sec... Appreciate you DIY experience!

Eloise, indeed CAPS solution is good for 24bits but I'll have to do some homework to build one with no-monitor + iphone remote + multi-room function while the Squeezebox Touch already does that Bottlerocket, the cable solution requires a pc on Idolse, the Touch seems the solution with the server as the Transporter already has a good DAC. Thanks to all of you, I'll research on feasibility of doing a SqueezeTouch-like i.e. server doing "24bits with no-monitor + iphone remote + multi-room function ".

the onkyo ipod dock still limits the size of the music collection and ipod needs to be on the dock and thus cant be used as a remote. now that I'm thinking about multi room music, i can see there are sonos and logitech. Another advantage of these 2 other "no pc" systems is that i can attach a 500gb or 1tb NAS ( vs hacking the ATV to go over 160gb ) but they cant output 24bits files. does anyone know another similar device playing 24bits or shall i finally go for a computer ? many thanks

diw, thanks for the reply the Airport Express must be used with the pc switched on , while the Apple TV works without pc ( except for first-use install if i remember) also, to answer you question, i dont mind DIY/complex/more expensive solutions ...

Hi y'all, I've just bought a Dacmagic, dont have a convenient place to put my laptop by it and dont want to run a 5-meter cable between the DAC and the laptop. So I thought about streaming with wire or wireless. Also, I'd like to use the iphone as a remote without my pc being switched on and thought about Apple TV but am flexible about using another device/media player/iphone app. What I have is 80gb of mp3, a laptop with spdif output and I plan to increase gradually my lossless files collection. What do you think would be a good set-up ? Many thanks for your advices!!!
