  1. Managed to get onto the website today for some reason, the bifrost does seem to tick all the boxes. I'll see if there is one for the gungnir.
  2. Coming out of a SONOS Connect I won't need a usb input into the dac, I'll be using digital coax. Just looked at the Metrum Octave II and at that price point including vat its near 1000euros which is about £850 and out of my price range unfortunately as I started to like the look of that one. i'll take a closer look at the schiit dacs. How would you describe their sound or are they transparent? does anyone else have any suggestions?
  3. Thanks for the idea but I'm really looking at going away from the disc players, My NAd player is now sat in its box in my cellar until I can figure out what to do with it.
  4. Junker Thanks for the reply, its appreciated. Unfortunately I can't seem to open the digital audio review site at work for some reason so it'll have to wait until I get home (3 weeks!) but thanks for listing his ratings of some of the dac's. Just had a look at the berkeley audio page and its a bit out of my price range to be honest!!
  5. Hmmmm seems my reply yesterday wasnt posted. Anyway thanks for the reply and information, I've had a lok at your suggestions and now i've come up with the following: Audio lab M-dac Musical Fidelity Rega Wyred 4 sound Mpre Beresford Bushmaster Schiit bifrost or Gungnir If money was no concern which would top your lists and why. I'm sort of leaning towards the w4s I think. The trouble is you start to read conficting opinions on how alot of these dacs sound and I know I should do home auditions but unfortunatly I don't have a lot of spare time at the moment and would like to reduce the list somewhat. Loiok forward to your recommendations.
  6. Thing is i'm not happy with the sonos sound at the moment compared to my old CD player hence the questions. The music has lost some depth and the sound stage is narrower than before, it all sounds constricted. I've looked at the Dragonfly beofre but it doesn't suit what I'm after to be honest but thanks for the suggestion.
  7. I don't think this one is for me to be honest after reading various reviews as I think it'll be too bright sounding for my system as it is now
  8. Thanks for that, I've looked at your list again an the Musical fidelity M1 is the one I was looking at yesterday. I think it has a slightly warm sound to it doesn't it? That would suit my tastes but I'm more concerned if it would improve the depth of sound stage etc
  9. Its been a little while and a few things have changed folks. Basically I've brought a 3Tb NAs drive, downloaded my music in FLAC and connected this to a SONOS connect. This is then connected to my Roksan Kandy K2. I'm pretty happy with everything though I feel the deprth and soundstage is a little more closed in than before. So basically after narrowing my choices down to the W4s and Nu-force I'm not sure about them. I've only had chance to look at the Nu-force again and I don't think I can use it due to the outputs from the SONOS connect. So any other ideas folks for a SONOs compatable DAC or have I got it wrog and the Nu-force can be hooked up to the Connect?
  10. Ed Thank you for the time your obviously spending helping me out with this. Its really appreicated. My head has started to swim looking at all the different sites, comparing specs etc. I think you may have found the perfect option for me though with the w4s pre. It seems to tick all the boxes and some extra ones to boot. 24/192 through all inputs is the big bonus though, atleast then I've got the best possible chance for optimum S.Q. Its a little expensive with shipping but $1175 using UPS which is about £745 but I'll have a think about it. I think we have a very strong contender. So I'm now down to: Nuforce udh-100 W4S MPre Time for a bit of a think and more reading. Thanks again
  11. Thank you everyone for your replies, its appreciated. My head is starting to hurt!!! lol. Audio elf - Thanks for the suggestions I think I've ruled the Arcam out due to possible system matching problems (too bassy). Marioed - Thanks for the reply. I'd really like to be able to stream the highest res files I can to the DAC so I'll need to check my laptop if it has a coaxial output. Do you think they'll be a noticable difference in S.Q between 24/96 and 24/192? I'll be using FLAc to rip CD's and I'll be looking at jriver for playback Pedro Dixon - Yes mate, east midlands, UK. Just been looking at the Nuforce udh-100 and it does look interesting. The fact it only had the one usb I don't think is a problem as in the future I'll be connecting a Sonos bridge to the laptop and on to my router. The sonos won't have anything to do with the dac. So new list to consider so far (in no particular order): Audio lab M-dac Wyred 4 sound Dac 1 Nuforce udh-100 (possible Nuforce dac-100 if can get a deal / 2nd hand) Musical Fidelity M1DAC
  12. Thanks for the detailed reply. The DAC-2 is out of my price range unfortunately but I'm interested in the DAC-1. What are the sound characteristics? I like the sound my kandy K2 amp and speakers make - slightly on the warm side of neutral with a nice balance of detail and the bass is tight but not over powering. So I assume if I've burnt my files to FLAC then the best way to transfer these would be via coax or toslink from the laptop as this would mean there effectively less for the DAC to do with regards conversion? I was considering the Musical Fidelity M1 DAC as well along with the Audiolab M-DAC. How do you think it compares to these? Thanks
  13. Hi all Interesting forum here. I've decided to give computer based music ago using a Acer laptop I have going spare at home. i'll be using EAC to burn my CD's and something like Foobar for play back. Music files will be stored on an external hard drive for portability / flexability. This will be replacing an ageing NAD Cd player. So basically i need a DAC, I've got up to £600 to spend on one so suggestions are very welcome. Also if anyone has any other ideas suggestions for my proposed set-up would be most welcome. One route that has been sugested to me is to get an apple airport express so I can stream wirelessly from the laptop. I assume that would hook in to a DAC and then the amp but I'm conerned about loss in S.Q. and if it would affect the speed of other devises on my network. My present system is: Hi-fi - NAD 542CD, Roksan Kandy K2 AMP, Dali Royal Tower speakers, Black Rhodinium Jive bi-wire speaker cable and rhythm interconnect For information I intend to buy some Sonos gear later to provide house wide music. Thanks.
