  1. Hmmm both of the cards you mentioned are difficult to source phofman! It seems these chinese cards are not easy to come once they get a bit old... The musiland digital times looks very similar to the digital march - but as you say, only 1 clock vs 2. I have found a foreign review which attempts to explain why this is: No doubt the finer points are lost in translation, can anyone make sense of it?! The exclamation that their implementation reduces signal jitter suggests it is a superior method...?
  2. Plenty of food for thought there! I am leaning towards a "better" PCI card, as they're cheaper and seem to offer better value for money... Phofman, I have dug up some info on the card from an old sales receipt and I got the name completley wrong there. It's a Aureon 5.1 card by terratec. See here for a close up photo: http://www.terratec.net/en/products/pictures/img/4098472_5ad22554cb.png It has dedicated SPDIF connectors, but I don't know anything about crystal(s) type/output transformer... Regarding the issue of only 1 crystal on that musiland, I don't think that will be an issue for me - my DAC only accepts redbook CD standard (16-bit/44.11 - in the rare my music is in another rate, I've setup the re-sampler in foobar to take care of it). So it my case, I assume a 1 crystal soundcard is sufficient? Thanks again everyone for the helpful advice I've been getting
  3. Thanks for the advice guys - that v-link 192 looks like a bargain at that price, too bad I don't live in the U.S. Just found this: Musiland Digital Times Soundcard PCI S/PDIF optical BNC | eBay A dedicated digital only sound card?! Sounds intriguing....
  4. I've been using my PC for computer audio for years now in my hifi system... I am using the toslink output on an old Aurentech 5.1 soundcard connected to my external DAC. The soundcard is a cheap solution, but I chose it due the CMI 8738 chipset - a guy has written custom drivers which apparently enable bitperfect playback (I use foobar>kernel stream to achieve this, on XP). https://code.google.com/p/cmediadrivers/ Sound quality is very good in and out my DAC (an old all discrete design, using a TDA1541A s1 chip). However, I've experimented with more modern designs (an Asus Essence One), and while I prefer the sound of my old multibit on the whole, the USB input on these newer DACs does sound better in some respects... So, I am thinking... Rather than do away with my old DAC altogether, would "upgrading" the computer transport to an Asynchronous USB device improve things for the better? I am thinking a Hiface 2.. would you guys say it is a worthwhile purchase over a basic PCI soundcard output?
