  1. This unit cannot record DSD and only plays 64fs DSD being that it's top end is 192/24. If you do get and compare the DA8, could you link it here. There have been a few wanting to read a comparison.
  2. Sorry to have not followed up with this thread. I was able to compare the M-51, Anedio D-2, M-7 and PWD II. My impression was it did better than the first two. The last two did some things better but were very much more alike than different. The PWDII had better low end extension and the M7 a bit better soundstage. This little box has some of the most flexible features found in a sub 2k DAC. It can rip vinyl at 192/24, play DSD, feed every output (analog and digital) at once with individual digital volume control for each input and output, has digital outs for a very good quality USB/Spdif converter for old DACs. The headphone out has analog and digital volume control. I was also in the local A/V store and was able to compare a Wavelength Proton and a Simaudio integrated/DAC and again the Hilo didn't sound out of place. The Sim sounded fuller but not as nimble (almost too full) and the Proton not as detailed. The unit just gives a natural and balanced sound without the digital nasties of many of the new units. Not as analog as vinyl but those that have vinyl have not had problems listening to it through the Hilo. Lynx Hilo - new offering from Pro Audio company. I've stopped comparing as I'm not itching for a change after 9 mos. living with it. And with that, I'll get off my Hilo soapbox.
  3. http://www.adkproaudio.com Scott mention you're with Head Fi for $1850 w/usb and $1725 w/o.
  4. ADKproaudio.com, Scott. Tell him you're with Head Fi and you can get a USB Hilo for $1850 and a non USB for $1725. I told him some of us hobbyists are getting interested in this and they are making it available at a very good price.
  5. Well, the best laid plans....... Hosting a meet gives no time to do what you want. I am going to see about bringing in a DAC a week to try. I have one friend that has like 4 of those, one has the Anedio D2 and I the Hilo. So I'm going to see about us cycling those DACs one a week over the month. Initial listening in meets is not conducive to critical listening. And these DACs are all in a league that needs familiarity and a few hours won't do it. One of our members did get to do some half hour sessions with each of the Hilo, D2, A gd Master 7 and M51 and eliminated the M51 in short order. The Hilo had not been set up properly (my inexperience) and the input volume was set up for +12 db, which brought up the noise floor. Lynx Hilo - new offering from Pro Audio company. His feeling was the Hilo and D2 were on similar level and that the Ref 7 had the best sound. This was on the HD-800 headphones driven from the new Headamp GSX-2 mk II.
  6. Scheduled for March 16th. At that time, there will be a few converters but I don't think the Offramps will make it. I know we have the V-link, HiFace II modded right now. I've not tried the HiFace since I got is as the sound is pretty good using Lynx's USB.
  7. Under $2k for the HE-6 and a used (quality) high current speaker amp, you can get some reference quality sound.
  8. Add the Lynx Hilo. Can be had for $1850/$1725 w/o usb.
  9. Will be comparing the two along with a PWDII, Buffalo III and a Anedio D2 in a couple weeks. Local meet with two headphone rigs. The HE-6 on a Nelson Pass F1J and the LCD-3 on a Schiit Mojo. Will get back with impressions.
  10. If it serves your needs, why muddy the picture with outside temptations? I've muddied and I'm finding new technologies do have better resolving power. If that means they sound better is another discussion. I don't see spinners holding out much longer vs file servers. Outboard DACs are improving compared to the better DACs from the day. The question is how the output of that design sounds. I'd love to take a current front end and put an older discreet output to it. But today's USB>Spdif converters keep the old quality DACs sounding pretty good. I know the 93 was popular when they came out but I don't think it could stand a DAC contest with even a mid fi dedicated DAC. Of course this is only one opinion. I was looking to go with an AN kit but changed my mind to a Lynx Hilo for the flexibility and better resolution.
