  1. I'm actually running a battery powered Red Wine Audio custom dual-mono Clari-T amp. The battery power is nice wherever it's possible actually, in my experience. It's true that there's still mains power on other pieces of the chain, but we needn't necessarily be perfect. Just better is good! I did build a CAPS v3, but I didn't pull the trigger on a battery powered supply. It's a very steep add on to a ca. $500 server. But maybe one day, who knows?
  2. Yowzers! My CAPS suddenly feels very inadequate...
  3. So I just built a CAPS v3 server with a few non-standard bits (different mSATA drive is probably the only thing that would matter). Here are the benchmark scores I come up with: Math 376 Running Image 553 Database 564 For me, response time seems pretty good via JRemote so far, but I've only loaded 13,000 files at this point (FLAC's only as yet). I'm wondering if your problem isn't with your storage... My response time picked up dramatically when I went to wired gigabit LAN from my NAS. Are you sure you're running USB 2.0? My 3-4 year old MacBook Pro was connecting to my USB HD over USB 1.0 for some reason and the times were APPALLINGLY slow. Just a thought...
  4. I did vote audiophile, but I definitely came to it through a rabid love for music. I grew up playing all sorts of instruments and translated this, eventually, into playing lots of guitar. Very badly. It's all about the music at the end of the day. But listening on good gear can transport me in a way that listening on crappy gear just can't ever hope to. Once you have that feeling, hearing something new, being moved or shaken more deeply by an amazing pair of speakers or cans or what have you, it's hard to turn back. And apparently, it's hard not to keep wanting more and more of that next new thing. Here lies the danger in being an Audiophile I think...
  5. Awesome -- That was the answer I was looking for. Thanks, Matias! How many others have a CAPS v3 up and running at this point?
  6. Hi all. Long-time lurker, first time poster! First off, I just want to say thanks to Chris and all of you folks for all the fantastic work you do daily on this site. It's been a tremendous help to me as I've started to dip my toes back into the world of computer audio. I'm a confirmed vinyl junkie and audiophile in real life, but I'm looking forward to playing around with a digital front-end again. In fact, I've followed the plans for Topanga, with some minor modifications, and am now up and running with my first headless music server! (Note: I'll plan to post some more about the process of building this thing and my experience with it once I've had a chance to play around a bit more.) For the moment, I have one question... I've got my server up and running and have placed it right on top of my Benchmark Dac-1. It actually looks really nice, with the Topanga case matching the color and width (less depth!) of the Benchmark. But for those who know the Benchmark, you also know how hot it runs... I've checked the CPU temp of the Atom processor over the first day or two of having it running, and it's never gotten higher than 47C. Some data scoured from the interwebs suggests that an operating temperature up to 50C is normal. What do you guys think about running at 47C? How hot does your CPU run on the DN2800MT board? I'll find an alternate way to set up the server and dac if need be, but it looks so cool like this! Thanks in advance for your help!
