  1. +1 Why should JRiver help support a rival? Very glad to see this to be honest. Must be highly contentious as this thread is huge after just a day and I haven't got time to read it all, just wanted to voice my support for JRiver.
  2. I thought long and hard about a DROBO but decided against it, pretty much for the reasons you are discovering. These were my bug bears; Cost Noise Resilience - this was the main reason for going against it, if a drive fails no problem, pull it out, put a new one in and the DROBO rebuilds it. If the DROBO fails, that's it . . . no data as far as I am aware, because if you buy a replacement unit and put the drives back in it rebuilds and wipes them, so you have to have a further backup. So add that lot up and its a very expensive option and not that flexible compared to a Synogly, which with the apps now available made it a no-brainer for me. QNAP make good units now too, but hard to beat Synology at the moment I reckon.
  3. I've got to go with David here and it's probably not the answer you want, but you really have to try it out for yourself. We all have different ears and different expectations
  4. I think you need to do a bit of research - definitely in decline, but not quite dead yet I'll see if I can find the latest figures.
  5. I have a 12V SLA setup, but when not using that I have one of these to power a DN2800MT motherboard - a definite improvement over a brick SMPS. Voltcraft FSP-1138 Fixed Voltage Power Supply
  6. Couldn't agree more and I would like to shake his hand and say thanks too
  7. I custom tag my genres, I rip using EAC and most of my new music is 'Americana' for which there isn't a tag. Once tagged though, I rarely use them or search on genre so its a pretty pointless exercise if I'm honest.
  8. No point in asking, as you will get mixed replies. Do what I did, get a DAC, a netbook and some lossless files on your netbook and take it round some dealers to discover the differences. I did it a few years back now, before it became as popular as it is now and I raised a few dealers eyebrows I can tell you, especially when they hooked my meagre £400 set-up into some of their esoteric gear. What did I discover by doing this, well mostly that the sound I could achieve was superior than anything in the same price bracket. Secondly you had to go up in cost terms significantly to equal a simple server and that a well configured bespoke music server punches well above its weight. Finally I confirmed that yes you can better something like a Zuma, but you have to have deep pockets At the end of the day what won me over was price and convenience and I have never looked back, its also enhanced my pleasure of music beyond anything I anticipated. Not for everyone I will agree, but for me its a perfect fit.
  9. Yes, no need for the 12V and you can cut it, which is what I have done in the past. I use a NAS at the moment but I have powered a 2.5" drive via a 5V linear walwart power supply and just had the drive connected to the MB by a longish SATA cable, so no power or spinning issues. You just need the RED 5V line and one of the BLACK GND wires, the others are surplus if you only run a 2.5" drive.
  10. No, 5V is all you need to power a standard 2.5" SSD. A 3.5" mechanical drive needs 12V & 5V, but 2.5" drives only need 5V which is how they can be powered solely from the 5V rail coming from a USB port
  11. The Civil Wars - The Civil Wars 2013 This really is rather good indeed, just playing it for the third fourth time today. If anyone has an interest in this duo, there is a very revealing interview with Joy about their split mid UK tour last year: The Civil Wars' Joy Williams On The Duo's Fragile Bond I was lucky enough to catch them live a couple of times, but the cracks were apparent the second time round - the magic had gone out of their live performance, which is a shame as they were (are) something rather special.
  12. If I was looking for myself I wouldn't be satisfied until I had tried them all - but if you don't want the bother . . . Gizmo
