If you are planning the dac2 upgrade to the se version, I suggest you take that route first. I came form a dac2 to the upgraded version and it really is a huge difference. I have been using a toshiba laptop with everything removed from bios down to the os (win7) then tried caps but not the ws os. The difference isn't as much as the dac2 upgrade for me, hence the laptop is back bec it is more convenient. You can always change to caps in the future when budget permits.

Can you tell us what he recommended? I am considering someone do a b3 to serve as preamp duties in the near future. -
Venturing into power cables I have access to the Mac power cable and it sounds very good on my system, I also have options for the transparent high performance powerlink which is in the same price range and a shunyata venom 3 which is cheaper. I am hoping there are Mac cable users here who have tried another cable and can share some feedback... cheers

I just finished auditioning three usb cables and I am happy to say that the stock cable is staying on my system for now. All the cables were too warm for my liking. Two made the sound smoother but also sounded veiled. Got two more incoming but so far please with no added expense . After testing it dawned on me that every part of the system really needed to match. Having come from a silver speaker wire to copper made my system sounded slightly warm, back then the wireworld starlight worked fine. Now it just won't fit my needs. Now being free from the usb cable expense, my friend left me with a pair of mac power cables (i believe this were from myaudiocables). I have been using a pair of diy cables from a local here and been satisfied with the upgrade from the stock wires. Well, I had the chance to try them.... ouch, these sounded very good, but these also meant spending....

I merely want to state that I do concur with what others have found at the volume setting of 47. The passive preamp I am using gives me the best sound when it is at 9 o'clock or higher and I have set it at 5:30 all the time and use the dac for volume adjustments (remote is handy since my preamp has none) and I have been listening at volume levels 33 to 45. Having read the volume setting findings, I gave it a listen. Lowered the preamp to 4:30 and adjusted the dac to 45 (variable). At this setting, the volume was within listening levels (for a condo resident which I am). Then I adjusted the dac volume via remote and it came like a breakthrough when it hit 47. Tried higher but it remained the same. Went to lower volumes and it was different... i found the 47 setting better, not night and day but it was there. Now I lowered my preamp volume a little bit more and it is a cozy 75 to 80db... Still with the same resolution, and now it stays there. i am not recommending this everyone but I think it is worth a try for the dac2se owners...
