  1. The Dacmagic Plus is really impressive, but at the moment I don't have enough money for something like this. It seems that I'll have to stick to some low-end DAC. Apart from the D1 I've seen that also the Audinst Hud-mx1 seems to be nice (but there isn't reported anywhere its frequency response). On ebay there a corean (re)seller that sells it for only 140 €. For the D1 I've tried to open it to see if I can imagine the origin of the problem. I'm not an electronics expert at all, but I can say the click comes from the B-type female USB connector inside it (but still not 100% sure). I don't know if other D1s have the same click when turned off or plugged to a pc/mac usb port. Maybe the usb connector is defective in some way, since it probably only powers the device. But, as I've already said, I'm not an expert, and these are only my noob impressions. Usually restaurant found in city centers (as the one you mentioned in Piazza del Campo in Siena) are good one, but are also really expensive, especially for tourists. Pizza from Napoli (and from Costiera Amalfitana) is thought to be best here in Italy, but for sure there are many locations where you can find excelent pizzas. You can find also bad pizzas, like everywhere. In foreing countries I think that only genuine italian cooks can produce a very good pizza, but clearly there are exceptions. Be aware of food/restaurants that pretend to be italian, because many times only the name is italian. I've heard that especially in the USA they tend to sell false italian food, but also here in Italy it happens sometimes, in particular with cheese and salami. You know, when you have beatufil places nearby you, you tend to non consider them that much and to take them for granted. Anyway, I've just finished my studies and since now I hadn't a large amount of money to spend for travelling. But now I'm planning to visit more of my country and of foreing ones, such as the USA or Australia. ;-)
  2. Thanks again RS! =) Never mind, this is probably due to a hardware breakdown... every suggestion is well accepted here ;-) I can also try to see if with the optical input it works... but unfortunately my laptop is not provided with a s/pdif port. If it won't work I'll have to look for another DAC with similar specs. Do you know something that has balanced outputs in addition to/instead of RCA? Consider also that I don't need any input apart from USB, since I don't produce music. I've never been to Tuscany, but I know it is one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. Amalfi and "la Costiera Amalfitana" are also of great value, not to cosider the fantastic pizza they cook there (the most delicious I have ever tasted). Maybe the town whose name you can't remember is Como or Lecco, which both are near the mountains and are on the Lago di Como's Lake.
  3. Hey RankStranger, Grazie mille! =) I've already tried to restart my pc, but not so many times in a row. Anyway, Audioengine says that the D1 should be recognized immediately by both pcs and macs, since it's a plug and play peripheral device (that's why there shouldn't be any drivers available, especially from Audioengine, but sincerely I don't know if someone else ever tried to create some drivers for it). I think that my unit is defective. I tried also with a different usb cable and also to plug it to other pcs (one with Win 7 32 bit and one with Xp). I'll try it also on a Mac. The really interesting thing is that Windows won't even recognized that something has been plugged into one of the usb ports, as when you plug a usb key (that will require some seconds to install the drivers), but it still powers it up. This is really weird. I've choosen the D1 cause below 200 € there are not many DAC that offer RCA and headphone outputs combined with a frequency response between 10 Hz and 25 KHz. The major drawback for me is that I live in Italy, and many brands are simply not available here... the lowest price I could find for it was 180 € (new). I decided to buy it from that american shop's closeout for only 109 $ (+ shipping and customs duties), which I thought was a bargain, but in the end if I'll not be able to get it to work I would be ripped off... =) I live near Milano, in a little town called Gorgonzola, exactly like the cheese! =) In fact the cheese was created for first time here. Here where I live maybe won't be as many nice things to see as in other cities like Roma, Venezia, Napoli, Firenze... but we have mountains and lakes nearby (max 3 hours by car), which can be enjoyed ;-)
  4. Hello everyone, This is my first post on this forum, and unfortunately it's for asking for help. Since I wanted a basic audio system for my laptop (DAC + headphone + 2 active monitors), I decided to start with the DAC (Audioengine D1) and a pair of fullsize headphones (Shure SRH-840). I got delivered from Shorelinemusic (a music shop located in Durango, CO) to my place (I live in Italy) the Shures and the Audioengine D1. I've unpacked the D1, plugged the usb cable to it and to my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite), and the problem starts now: the D1 is not recognized by my Win 7 64-bit via USB 2.0. Nothing happens in Win, the only thing I've noticed is that the power led of the D1 turns on, and after 2 seconds I hear a click inside it. Shorelinemusic sold it as a closeout "open box return", but they assured me all the stuff sold as "open box return" is tested before reselling. Any suggestions? I won't be able to send it back, since closeout stuff is not covered by warranty (beside the extra cost for shipping...). I'll everyone who will able to help me. =) PS. I've already sent an email to Shorelinemusic and to Audioengine, but they have not replied yet.
