I recently purchased the superb sounding 1997 20-bit remaster Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue', as well as some remasters of Coltrane ('My Favorite Things') and Kenny Burrell (Midnight Blue) recordings from the same era. Unfortunately, to my tastes, the recording engineers for the Coltrane and Burrell sessions chose to mic the instruments seemingly 'hard left' or 'hard right' (perhaps still trying to deal with the 'newness' of stereo recording), destroying the soundstage and the ambiance of the studio. In contrast, Kind of Blue, the oldest of the recordings, leaves me breathless, and seemingly in the room with a practically 3D presence via it's natural mic placement.
Can anyone recommend any jazz recordings from the era that were mic'd as naturally as 'Kind of Blue'?
