  1. Yes,Tim. However, if I could find a USB cable that carried some electronics to convert digital to analogue and so connect to the Redgum, then I would feel happy using the iMac. Also, I am keen to test the Cambridge 640A v2 under similar circumstances, as you suggested. Some cheap ones on the Internet here. I had macpros when working. Constant use, bad for the neck. Now use iMac. Cheaper and easier. If I need portability, use a USB key. Always find computers etc when I arrive at a venue and usually properly set up. Over many years using pc's and mac, desk tops and portables, give me a desk top mac any day, with parallels. Brian
  2. Thanks Tim. In my limited experience in buying audio equipment (Twice in 40 years), I found nothing beats hearing things yourself. So today I managed to do that. I was quite impressed by the RGHF Headphone amp from Redgum Audio. It seems to have some grunt for the HD650's. The Senns seemed to hum along and really open out. See my reply to Audiozorro. Brian
  3. Audiozorro, better to give to someone who will use it more frequently than I have been doing - about a dozen times in four years. Rega CD, Rega amp (no headphone jack), Dynaudio speakers - not even broken in. My daughter and son-in-law will use them. Anyway, if I want to hear them, I still can. Since buying the Senn HD650, even through the headphone jacks on ipods and iMacs, I have played music nearly every day. So you can see! By-the-by, heard a headphone amp today in Aus (Redgum Audio), playing (not ideally) through my ipod+ipod jack+3.5 jack to four RCA's where each channel has a separate volume control. My hearing is not even from ear to ear. (This happens when you get older, shall we say!). The amp is 'set-up' individually for the Senn HD 650 on impedence mainly. He prefers to do this. Worked the Senns beautifully for well over an hour. Normal retail for this Headphone amp is $1250Aus. All his equipment is selling at the moment for half price. 'Moving sale' price. With cables this headphone will cost me $675Aus. This arrangement suits me for now. I can play music while on the computer (writing maths text books), lounging in the sun on the back porch with a nice cool drink or anywhere else in the house. While the amp is not small, it is portable enough with headphones. All I require is a power point. I can always go back to speakers etc a little later, as you suggest. Brian
  4. Thanks Tim and Flatmap. You said earlier, Tim, that the Senn650 requires solid power to get the best out of them. I have them already. Will the Nuforce Icon achieve this? Thanks, Brian
  5. My aim is to use the iMac as source to integrated amp/dac (as you suggest) to Senn 650. I also what to keep the footprint as small as possible (my desk is already too crowded). The USB out from the iMac gives a better signal than headphone slot (is this true?). Given this, if the amp has a built in DAC, can it accept the digital signal from the iMac and, if so, what type of cable? If I still have this all wrong, what are my options so as to use iMac+amp/dac+Senn650? Also ipod to integrated amp to Senn 650. (Don't mind carrying amp tp another room. The dock port gives better signal than the headphone slot. Would the dock/RCA cable be appropriate here? I have given all my equipment (CD,amp and speakers) away to replace with headphones + computer/ipod for around the house. Thanks for you patience and help. Brian
  6. Just Senn 650 into headphone on iMac is a little thin. Bass not bad. I also found my old Senn Hd414X's. So old the foam disintegrated. Bought new pads. These are now used as a connection to my TV. What about the ProJect Headphone amp SE? Brian
  7. Thanks Tim for your suggestions. So my connections would be 1. iMac USB to RCA imput on Amp to headphones. or 2. ipod dock out+Apple dock connector/RCA cable+amp+headphones Brian
  8. Maybe folks would comment on suitable USB amp/dac unit for Sennheiser HD650 headphones. I wish to use iMac, iTunes lossless files via the USB port, when working on computer. As well, I would like to use same lossless files on an ipod, connected to same amp/dac, to listen in another room. No other portability required. I play mainly classical music. At present, the ipod or iMac via headphone port seems somewhat thin. So far the Lehmann USB headphone amp seems the best but the price is a little high. I have dispensed with my Rega CD, Rega amp and Dyneaudio speakers as I do not use them enough. My son-in-law and daughter have these! I wish to replace with the above system. Many thanks, Brian
