  1. About high fidelity - I wasn't thinking about technological view of quality of the sound, more about truthfulness of conveying original information. Is it just a simple standard how symphonic orchestra is positioned, or is there something more to the positions of the instruments. Is a decision to position - for example - a solo guitar on "Dazzed and confused" on the left channel first important? It is my opinion, that if we consider Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page, it is. The situation is not the same as with the Beatles recordings - they were mostly made in mono technology. All Led Zeppelin recordings were originaly made in stereo. The decision to re-master the Beatles recordings (re-mastering made by Sir George Martin) in original mono is something I would call "high-fidelity".
  2. Here I am confirming myslef with two links: Led Zeppelin III - Barry Diament mastering with channels swapped | Steve Hoffman Music Forums DCC Archive - Led Zeppelin cds, remaster vs. original | Steve Hoffman Music Forums As I googled a little more, it seems it is a "well known" fact that there is a total mess with channels on different printings... So much for "high fidelity"...
  3. This is exactly what I observed. For instance "Dazed and confused" - Led Zeppelin Original vinyl - After the intro bas guitar, the solo guitar is first heard on the left channel, goest to the right and back to the left Older CD releases ("Early days & later days" and "Mothersihp") - After the intro bas guitar, the solo guitar is first heard on the right channel, goes to the left channel and back to the right HD 24/96 release - same as vinyl Can you confirm this? Thank you, Davor.
  4. sjoc2000 - thank you for your reply. To be more precise, I would like to know if 5V AND GND can be removed. This means ONLY D+ and D- would be connected. Thank you.
  5. Hello! Sorry if this subject has been aleady addressed... I would like to know if it is necessary to have the Vcc (+5Vdc) and Ground (GND) connections on USB cable if DAC is self powered? What could be the problems if this connections would be ommited? Thank you, Davor.
  6. I found this on well tempered computer - Will playing 16 bits sources on a 24 DAC affect sound quality? Very unlikely, all what is done is padding 8 zero’s too the 16 bits to make it a 24 bit word. In fact there might even be a benefit, if you apply digital volume control, you can chop off these eight zero’s (48 dB reduction) without losing resolution. I own a Audio-gd NFB-17.32 DAC which has a 32bit receiver and Wolfson 8741 can accept 32bit data. On the Audio-gd site it is recommended to set the bit transfer to 32bit for better quality. I am using mpd and I would like to have some opinions about setting the bit transfer to 32 in mpd.conf file? (adding format "*:32:*" line) Are this just added zeros or does this acctually helps in better performance? Thank you, Davor.
  7. DerekR - where did you get the VoyageMPD with 3.9 kernel? Thank you, Davor.
  8. Derek, if you would like to patch your current kernel instead of using the 3.9 rc6, use this - [PATCH v5] ALSA: usb: Work around CM6631 sample rate change bug
  9. Managed to get all the needed programs and libs into less that 4mb and compile everything into kernel. Also - hard drive with music files is not attached to USB, instead the data comes from Linksys nslu2 through lan. So USB is used just to attach the USB DAC. Almos perfect...if there is such a thing... Thank you for the advice about swapping activity!
  10. I dont't understand what you mean with this. Davor.
  11. The RAM problem was solved with 2G USB disk, and using the "external overlay" option and adding 512Kb SWAP memory. I asked about the power supply and capacitor upgrade, because I noticed that many Squeezebox users are doing this. All in all it seems to me, that Asus WL500gp router is quite good for audio player/streamer because of the minimalistic build, which means less distortion from circuits (graphics etc.). For the the possible DC problem in the USB powered DAC, I added the USB2ISO between DAC and USB port, I didn't mention this in my first post. Thank you for your opinion Julf, Davor.
  12. Hello! I recently managed to "transform" my Asus WL-500gp router to audio player/server with the use of the open-WRT. I use mpd player daemon with ALSA. 1TB drive is added for storage. MPD is controlled via GMPC - Gnome Music Player Client. For the DAC the HotAudio USB WOW DAC is used. I must say that I am surprised by the audio quallity, as I did not think it could be so good as it sounds. Any opinions/experiences with such configuration, or to be more precise with the Asus routers (or others) as audio players? Do you have any idea how to improve the configuration - power supply upgrading, capacitors upgrading... Thank you, Davor.
