  1. LOL I just installed MKVtoolnix a few minutes ago, and it’s not the friendliest interface. 😂 I’ve never had any issues with DVDAE. I’ll probably start there, since I’ve used it for well over a decade, and then I’ll experiment with MKVtoolnix too.
  2. Thanks. I actually have the paid version of DVDAE already, hence my question about whether I can use it instead of MKVtoolnix. I haven’t ripped any blu-rays in years, and when I previously did, I had to first use DVDFab Passkey to decrypt the discs. I’m glad to know that MakeMKV handles all the decryption. Have you compared DVDAE and MKVtoolnix? I’m just curious if you experience any functional differences. I’m glad to know that MKVtoolnix offers a free, open-source option, as @The Computer Audiophile mentioned. It’s good for the hobby.
  3. After more reading, I see that some people make a backup with MakeMKV and then use DVD Audio Extractor to extract FLAC files. Is there any advantage to using MKVtoolnix instead of DVDAE?
  4. You're the best, Chris. Thank you. In all seriousness, your articles guided me into computer-based audio over a decade ago, and you continue to blaze the trail today. Keep up the great work.
  5. Perfect. I'll give this a try. Is there anything else needed to handle encryption? In the past, I recall needing DVDFab Passkey on some discs.
  6. Thanks for your response. I would like to rip the stereo content as individual tracks and play it through JRiver on a 2-channel system. I have dBpoweramp, which I know can convert formats, if necessary. Ultimately, I want to have FLAC files for playback.
  7. What is the best current method for ripping audio tracks from Blu-ray discs on macOS? Several years ago, I had a PC that I used for ripping discs. I used DVDFab Passkey to unlock the encryption and then DVD Audio Extractor to complete the rip. Ever since I switched to Mac, I haven’t ripped any discs. What’s the best program or set of programs to use currently? Thanks for any insights!
  8. Just ripped my first SACD to .iso format. I plan to save these for archiving purposes and also extract to .dsf format. Should I also save the text file that accompanies the .iso, or can I just trash it?
  9. ted_b, can you send me your guide? Thanks!
  10. I just want to put in a good word for Jason from Northeastohiopcs. I've been communicating with him the last few days, and I just received the tracking notice today that my SACD-ready PS3 is on its way. He's been great to work with. He is really upfront about everything that he is able to do to recondition your system. He also will also find you a unit if you don't already have one. I'll keep everybody posted once I start ripping.
  11. I'm very close to picking up a system with firmware 2.70. The seller offered to upgrade the system to 3.55 if I want or just leave it alone. As long as I keep the system at 3.55 or below, is there any advantage to any particular firmware? Or will every firmware at 3.55 or below work equally well with the SACD Ripper software? Thanks!
  12. Thanks for this info! May I ask what you paid for your unit? This sounds like a promising lead.
  13. Hey Folks, this is my first time posting but I've been lurking around here for awhile. I've been trying to keep up with this thread but it's also gotten pretty long, so forgive me if this has been covered already... From a cursory Google search, it appears that there are now ways to downgrade a PS3 to firmware 3.55 or below. Does such a downgrade work with the SACD ripper software? And are we still limited in which models of the PS3 that can be used with the SACD ripper software? I've been thinking about taking the plunge and getting a used PS3 to backup all my SACDs, but I haven't had much time to actively search for one with the appropriate firmware. Thanks!
