  1. OK, more troubleshooting and new, yet strange, info to share. It seems to somehow be related to the volume control in OSX. So I discovered the issue in my normal setup, volume at max in OSX and Dragonfly feeding my powered desktop speakers. Then I turned the volume down one notch in the OS and turned up the volume a bit on the speakers to compensate, the issue is still there but the pops are a little quite and in different places in the song. Then I turned the volume down one more notch in the OS (so it's at 14 of 16) and again adjust speaker volume up to compensate, and the issue totally disappears, or at least drops to a level where I can't hear it. So then I plugged my speakers directly into the audio jack on the iMac and with the volume in the OS at max I still get the occasional pop sound, without even using the Dragonfly, though the pops are quite and much less frequent. Then I back the volume down one notch int he OS and the issue disappears again. I've tried this in VLC and iTunes with and without BitPerfect in use. What the hell...?
  2. Anyone else tried or having issues with the Dragonfly DAC on Yosemite? I'm now getting pops or clicks in the sound, and they appear to be tied to the DAC somehow. I've tried multiple softwares including base iTunes and no difference. They are not random, they always in the same places on any given track. I've tried my Cypher Labs Theorem 720 and no issues there, those same songs play flawlessly. I've tried all the usual stuff like restarting, trying another USB port, etc. Anyone else tried this setup or have ideas for me?
  3. I have issues with the Dragonfly 1.2 on Yosemite. It was working fine before the upgrade, I now get pops or clicks in the sound. They're not random either, I can play the same song multiple times and get them in the same places during playback. I've ruled out everything else by trying my Theorem 720 as a DAC and that one works fine, so it's something specific to the Dragonfly or it's chipset.
  4. It's funny to come back and read this now, the whole context of this article is now more interesting given that, while you were writing this article, Apple and Beats were sitting down and finalizing their deal...
  5. I doubt you'll see hi-rez files because the vast majority of music is not even available in that format. I highly doubt Apple is going to put money into that market when probably less that 1% of music is even available in that format. I do see them doing CD quality lossless files from iTunes though in the near future. That's what I would I'd, position Beats streaming as a convenient and great discovery tool and tie it into iTunes where you can download lossless high quality versions of your favorite albums.
  6. I'm confused, are you saying you've upgraded to MC19 for Mac, I didn't know that was out yet?
  7. I've tried the mydac and found it a little bright sounding for my taste. It's not bad, but if you're looking for a warm or more musical sound it may not be for you.
  8. I'm curious what people think about the new releases, is the sound quality on par with Amarra yet?
  9. I like the interface and features, but I have yet to find a version of jriver that sounds as good as Amarra. Amarra has plenty of issues, but sound quality is king and it has that in spades...if you can get it to work.
  10. Agreed, as much as the basic act of using Amarra frustrates me it's still my go to player for sound quality. So I guess they don't 'need' to get things working or add features, but how awesome would it be if they did?
  11. All of the other players I use do gapless playback with my ALAC and FLAC files just fine. Given their explanation I at least understand why it's an issue for them, but it's a problem other companies have solved and it's time they get with the program.
  12. I wanted to report back on my issue with gapless playback not working. So it turns out that true gapless playback is not really supported for the FLAC and ALAC file types because they're still a compressed file. On their advice I've tested gapless playback with a true uncompressed file type in AIFF and gapless playback works great, but the same songs ripped with ALAC don't work for me. So if you have any music that you're wanting in true gapless playback you may want to look at ripping to wave or AIFF.
  13. Wow, guess I'm not the only one clueless about this model? Has anyone tried their X1 USB to SPDIF converter? This is supposed to be the same DAC-IT but with that converter instead.
  14. Anyone listened to this new version yet or know if there are any reviews out yet? i have the original dac-it and am contemplating an upgrade...
