  1. I know don't use iTunes, but in our family we have two iPhone's, two iPad's and a iPod so sort of stuck using iTunes for sync purposes. I also use Mac most of the time and use Audirvana + and of course this has a integrated mode for iTunes playback, I only listen to digital as background music as my main system is vinyl. Now I want to know if there is a player for Windows that will allow the same type of playback as Audirvana, standalone player that allows integrated mode with iTunes. If not how can I stream music to a Airport Express in Windows Thanks Keith
  2. I'm pretty new to the high-res stuff but how on earth does looking at a DR number tell you anything you need to know about sound quality. I have one HD Download Norah Jones "Come Away With Me" and I also own the original CD, the DR average of both versions is a difference of one 12 for the album and 13 for the HD. But the HD has more detail, finer tones and is smoother so the DR would tell you what if you didn't listen to them?
  3. Yes my Dac is the same, when nothing is playing Audirvana reports 32/196, and changes depending on what sample rate I'm listening to
  4. Just a quick one, you will not get a raid system without a fan unless you want the HD's to cook. They need fans to help cool the HD;s that are usually stacked very close and very tight to keep the enclosure small. I've always used G-Technology | External Hard Drives for Mac, RAID & SSD Storage raid systems, they are reliable, fast and quiet, the fans are thermo-regulated smart fans and are quiet
  5. Nice cameras, I used to have a lovely wooden field 4x5 until fuji decided producing quick-loads was not a good idea anymore and I decided carrying 40 double darks was not a good option for me, I do miss those big velvia trannies though
  6. Yeah the bottle is photographed the BG os all photoshop just having a bit of fun
  7. While SSD drives are the only truly silent drives cost for something with decent capacity is well pretty high. I use OWC SSD drives for my operating system but to use them for music storage I would need two 960GB drives at over $1100 each, um no thanks. As far as standard HD drives, you will generally find mobile HD's quieter than their desktop counterparts, but as with all of the spinning platters they make noise. Fanless are quieter but in my experience they also reduce the life of the HD though heat issues. Iomega have never had a great reputation as being reliable backup, not sure what HD's they use. I also hate with a passion LaCie, the only one I bought had a Samsung drive and it failed within 6 months. I use Hitach drives now with no problems, although I state I do use their ommercial drives not their standard ones, these have a 5 year warranty and I have never had a failure....Yet lol The G-Technology external drives are Hitachi but these are preformatted for Mac so you would need to reformat for Windows, a 30 sec job. Oh course this is my experience only
  8. Lack of what understanding, sorry just because someone else says they don't think that way, good on them. It's not what I think so it's my opinion. Personally OSX Lion and now Mountain Lion are full of bugs, half baked operating systems that should not have been released, the iPone 5 is not a major update, no innovation there, in fact a half baked OS6 with woeful maps that I would love to have seen if Steve would have released them. And in Australia the Mac Mini spec'ed up with the fastest HD and 16 GB ram only is already $1380.00 How is that good value for a computer that is slower than what I quoted, has intergrated graphics, less ram etc etc. Sorry Mac is losing there way, but remember thanks thats my opinion
  9. Wow what a thread, interesting reading with so many varied opinions. So hey may as well add mine. Apple without Steve Jobs I feel are losing their way a little, great the new Mac Mini can still have it's ram changed but really by the time you spec the machine up to a decent level it's way overpriced. For the same money I can build a Hackingtosh that will run rings around just about all the mac lineup. And don't give me Mac use better parts, I can pick the cream of Motherboards running Thunderbolt as well, Ivy Bridge Processors, GDDR5 Graphics, 2 x 120GB SSD Drives, 32GB of Ram, Case, Power Supply etc etc and run at around $1300 US. I've been a Mac supporter for a long time but lately they are getting less specs and higher prices. And while the iMacs are nice looking, especially this new one, they are woeful screens (Ok I'm a Professional Photographer and hate the screens) they are also overpriced for the specs, i5 processor as standard with 8GB or Ram standard for over $2100 in Australia, whats the upgrades going to make it cost. I'll keep my 27in screen and build my own computer to run OSX. That said my music server is a Mac Mini, that I upgraded to 8GB of ram and 120GB SSD drive, myself, simple to do if your careful with the SSD drive upgrade. I'm going to replace the optical drive with a Hitachi 750GB 7,200RPM drive to hold my music and movies on
  10. Personally if your going to use the original HD as music now that the SSD is operating system and apps I would first format the old HD and then put the music on it. That's what I did
  11. I'm only just starting to get into this, always just listened to CD's, but I downloaded my first 24/96 recording, Norah Jones Come Away with Me. Sounds great, yes more detailed and smoother in her voice. But it's less volume than the CD, so I have to crank the volume up a bit, which is fine but wondering why? And second whats the point of a recording in 24/44 what does that give you over a 16/44? Thanks
  12. Conductor Headphone Amp / DAC / Pre Amp This looks like a interesting piece of gear. Now I'm not a tech head, I only know what I like sound wise but from my limited tech head in audio this looks like it's got some pretty good specs, but I'm sure a lot of you will make more sense of it than me
