  1. I dont really make purchases. All of my library is downloaded from private locations with the exception of promos , alternate studio masters and recording session given to me. Its not that I dont want to pay for music.. its just that most releases are piss poor, either in presentation or quality. I'd be hard pressed to even buy a CD nowadays because of the limited fidelity, never mind a digital AAC download There are some albums id jump at to buy properly made 24Bit/96kHz digital masters, but those arent the albums they are releasing. For example one of my all time favourite albums, The Wall recently received an immersion set, rushed to press without the master tapes being rebaked / fixed to allow for a multichannel or high fidelity presentation... the week after for FREE Pbthal did a rip of a sealed original UK vinyl thats utterly delightful, that blows the most recent and all previous CD masters out of the water, again for FREE. If its an independant artist or a small label my views are a little different and I will in some cases buy the album if I like it.. I mean everyone's gotta eat right? Just some cunt big label record executive doesnt need another serving of caviar.
  2. Avoid the CDs, and most of the vinyls.. Theres a 7 1/2 ips Reel To Reel collection of alot of their stuff. Thats what you should be hunting for, some really nice rips at 24/96 with generally decent a/d equipment have been done. Its got a bit of a noise floor but if you look past that its far more dynamic and detailed than the other offerings. Look around, Im surprised no one else has mentioned them.
  3. Cuz he isnt a prick who pays for his music LOL The artist isnt getting anything anyways so why would you waste your own money that could go towards gear?
  4. Its 16/44.1 redbook. Just compare the two and see which is your favorite, theres 6 or 7 different pressings of this sitting in my iTunes and I keep going to his new 2012 Final Master every time.
  5. Really disappointing release. The SACD has absolutely horrific mastering (listen to that kick drum on Billie Jean) and it does no justice to one of the best and most thoughtfully produced albums of all time. Throw away your SACDs, your HDTracks copies and grab Pbthal's flawless Final Master vinyl rip from the original US press Epic LP, by far the best sounding version of the album. The only complaint is his A/D stage but its minor compared to the sonic improvements offered by his version.
  6. I just finished setting up my bedroom surround system, and it sounds pretty decent with blurays and AVCHD folders coming off my PS3 into my A/V Receiver via LPCM, DTS-HD or TrueHD. Naturally Id like to venture into playing with surround sound music as well, I have a slim PS3 so SACD's are out of the question. Essentially what I need to do is turn a set of wavs (each a separate channels) into a dts-hd stream (5.1 24/96) using the DTS Encoder Suite.. ive done that no problems, what I cant figure out is what to mux that onto to playback. Is there a way to create a static menu or 'empty' video blu ray disc / avchd folder that has dts-hd audio? This is only a temporary solution, I want to see if the music/ my setup is worthwhile enough in surround for me to get a proper 5.1 playback method (htpc based perhaps) in place. Additionally, has anyone bought 3 2 channel USB dacs and use Aggregated Sound Devices on OSX to playback surround content bitperfectly?
  7. Snatching is snatching, borrowing from a friend.. sometimes over distance. As for why I have Weiss Saracon, it was bought for a studio I worked at and they had an extra license so no harm no foul. People who use free software are hilarious, its not very good. Altho I cant honestly say anyone of even meager intelligence would have a problem finding an identical and fully functioning copy of Saracon if they were interested in doing so.
  8. Wiess Saracon does a very impressive job of DSD to PCM conversion, lacking a DSD DAC I just snatch SACD albums and convert them to PCM myself. Im sure a DSD DAC would sound 'better' but how much really, since very few DSD released albums were even mastered in the DSD domain, something that is very difficult.
  9. Alright, I run Amarra out to a DAC over TOSLiNK, thats always worked very nicely since I had that as my core audio device as well. Now im using some shitty computer speakers for all audio output except music, so I unchecked follow core audio. This is great, no loud or obnoxious OS noises, popups, possibly damaging my speakers since their levels are different. Now every time I open Amarra I have to actually set in the I/O settings to use my digital out and not the computer speakers. Is there a way to tell Amarra to do that automatically, or just remove the option for it to change it, stop recognizing other outputs etc... ?
  10. Hi, I have a very large iTunes library, majority of the files are ALAC with many being above 24/96. I use home sharing frequently to access the library (stored on a mac pro in my office / library) in my bedroom on a macbook feeding some Totem Mites. Anyways, Im a big fan of Amarra for playback on my monitors in the office but obviously it doesnt work via homesharing. Short of mirroring some of my library downstairs on the laptop purely for amarra playback seems excessive. Any way to use amarra over the network?
  11. Im pretty sure the disk is well. I havent experienced a single issue other than this with it. I definetly need a backup, my system grew exponentially without proper investment in backup. Hopefully I'll be upgrading to a newer Mac Pro model soon and get 10TB or so of extra storage. This is very rare, and I really cant find why its happening, its something in the headers corrupted. Im re-adding a couple of the original FLACs that were for albums that experienced that corruption, that I still had sitting around now to see if upon embedding in the new ALACs with iTunes a similar issue appears. To be honest, iTunes should just be smart and hold album art as a folder.jpg in the album folder. Then it would be much more comfortable to put 2 or 3 mb artwork on albums. I love the interface but the way it manages the library can be useless at times.
  12. When I hit 6TB I'll call it large. I still only have 220GB of highres 24/96 SACDs, DVD-As, BD's, master tapes and Vinyl rips which is pretty small IMO. I dont understand using AIFF over a lossless format like ALAC, is there actually any benefit?
  13. Sadly I think we have different issues. The files themselves are corrupted, like when the file is being re-written back to the drive with the updated album art something is going wrong. Ive tried to open the ALAC's in various utilities and the apparently damaged ones just dont work. I've been using XLD for years. It wont even reconvert the damaged files. Im not too upset about losing albums, its a rip or a download away for most but theres a ton of promotional film scores and studio masters that if ive changed the art on and its ruined the files theres a chance they are gone forever.
  14. Okay so Ive got a pretty small, 900GB iTunes library, lots of redbook ALAC and 24/96 material. Ive been re-covering and tagging my library using iTune's built in edit tool. Now, some of the tracks ive edited just wont play after, it'll skip through the damaged track and all damaged tracks after it. When viewing in finder the album art is often cut off with the rest black confirming my suspicion that something happens in the album art embedding process thats corrupting these tracks. Im royally screwed as ive been doing this for days and I must have embedded 200 covers by now, so trying to go through and find which albums have these corrupted tracks is a nightmare. I cant establish anything linking the corrupted tracks to each other, it appears random so it must be a system error during embedding and not dependent on the file. Finally, can someone recommend a program for embedding art quickly and conveniently while bypassing the iTunes editor to prevent further instances of these corrupted tracks?
  15. So i have a pretty cheap setup, 2 KRKs, decent DAC, Amarra, and more music than one man could need. I was listening to Roger Waters - The Wall Live In Berlin, the 2.0 SACD mix sounds fine but the 5.1 version via VLC (as none of the audiophile players to my knowledge support 5.1) on my 2.0 speakers mind you, blows it out of the water. The seperation on instruments is better, orchestrations ive never heard come out, etc. So my question is, does this actually sound better, or could it just be louder as the result of the downmix, further more are there any OSX audio players that support 5.1 downmixing (so I can control the process, or at least rest assured its being processed cleaner than VLC) Thanks!
