  1. Thanks for the reply, DigiPete Hadn't noticed that there was a difference in the GLS for 8130 and 82XX, that obviously complicate(d) things. I went down to local store where they had Genelec 8240a on display and on sale (demo). Expecting close to 8260a sound quality I was disappointed. In fact, they didn't seem like an upgrade compared to my current passive speakers at all (20+ year old Jamo Concert II), though I realize many factors play into this assessment. The store also had the 8260a, so I asked to hear them (for comparison with what I thought I remembered). Oh my... Now THAT was the sound I was looking for So it seems that the ~4k$ difference in price between 8240a and 8260a makes for quite a difference - who knew!? So until I can safely afford a pair of 8260a, it looks like I'll be sticking with the passives and upgrading other components instead. If there's a cheaper way to get the sound from the 8260s I'm all ears
  2. Greetings I recently made the somewhat disturbing discovery that I might be an audiophile... This came to after hearing a stunning performance with a 5.1 system of Genelec 82XXs (and sub). I was sold. I wanted that sound. So now I'm looking to invest in my first high(er)-end components, but I'm still fairly new in all this and could use a bit of help. Obviously I'm going for Genelec monitors (I have been reading about and listening to others just in case), but I also wanted it to have a digital input - I like the idea of the signal staying digital until the DAC that's actually made for the speaker. So this means 8130a or higher. I'll be using them on desk, so figuring near field and no sub needed (?). Oh, and won't be doing 5.1 right away; that'll have to wait until I stop being a student and start making money So only going 2.0 for now, but figure that the 8130a can be used in a 5.1 if/when upgrading later. The 8130a have an XLR input, so this means I'll be needing a DDC (USB/FireWire/SPDIF -> AES/EBU) - actually, is it called DDC or just an interface?? Anyway, been looking at the Stello U3, which seems to fit the bill (right interface and takes 24/192 signal). I'm having trouble finding anyone using this combination though (PC -> Stello U3 -> 8130a), so have I missed something? In fact, having trouble finding anyone using the 8130a at all Also, I realize that the sound I can expect won't be as good as the 5.1 82XX system (especially because I'm looking at 10% of the cost), but I'm hoping it won't be too far off either. Oh, and new to CA, but definitely here to stay!
