  1. Also, pursuant to my prior noob thread (thanks to Mayhem and kthers who took the time to explain), i did rip some material to .wav with WMP (turns out I do have Win7), and did some listening comparisons over Sonos vs. th CD player as transport. All material was processed thru the Peachtree Nova Pre's DAC. So it was really an evaluation of Sonos streaming res vs CD optical. I know this should be the same, but there WAS a minute impact to detail to my ear, and I had my wife switch the sources on the fly. Not huge and only detectable on the better -recorded classical material (Telarc Tchaikovsky recording and Handel's Dixit on Archiv Label, but it was there. So I definitely would want to option on the fly too connect the comouter directly. A surprise of this entire process has been just how bad some CD recordings are, especailly the rock stuff. Van Halen 5150 and Billy Idol stand out here, but there is some stuff in the digitally recorded classical stuff that has a lot of artifact in the sound, as if the mixers were boosting certain frequencies or compressing the material. I guess some of the early digital recording gear and A to D process was just not that good. Sometimes more system detail is not always better
  2. just setup Sonos into my audio system and am happy with it, knowing it's limitations of 16/44. I would like to rip my CD collection to a computer, with the flexibility to either stream over Sonos, or connect directly via USB if I wish for better sound. i wish to rip lossless. So my question is which media software to get. It seems i-tunes will work perfectly with sonos, but J. River Media seems really cool and has more format flexibility. And, wwould I be able to seamlessly stream the JRM library content via Sonos as with itunes, or do these two not "get along". Last question- given I have not ripped anything yet, does it matter which lossless I use - AIFF versus FLAC. At some point, I intend to purchase music from HD Tracks and other 24/96 and higher purveyors. Thanks for any help.
  3. Thx guys. I'll start with itunes Mayhem and see where that tskes me. Nice to start from ground up so i can do what i want.
  4. Thx Mayhem. Would be great if that simple. One thing I'm not clear on is how the ipad or iphone will control an i- tunes library on the Windows PC. Does this happen over WiFi? I was under the impression that itunes did not have bi-res capability or supported lossless formats. Is that a new thing? The idea with Sonos was to have the PC "music server" elsewhere in the house and bring the content wirelessly into the Peachtree.
  5. 2 weeks ago I was shopping for a replacement CD player and non-powered subs to replace a failing variable output and 1980s vintage Cerwin Vegas. First week was spent getting into 21st century on subs and this week understanding that only relics still try to buy CD players. In between, I acquired an SVS PB13 Ultra and a Cambrige Audio Stream Magic 6. The SVS stays but the CA SM-6 is going back because the digital volume control on these is unstable - they may go to full volume at any time - so I do not recommend these to be used in pre-amp mode, but that is another story. Instead, I bought a SONOS ZP-90 (or whatever they call it this week), the Bridge, and I have a Peachtree Audio Nova Pre on the way. Existing equipment is a Denon DCD-2700 CD player now relegated to transport duty, my main Llano Trinity-200 power amp, and my B&W 683 main speakers. Near term plan is to listen to my CDs on the player and internet radio / Sirius on the Sonos. I now know what Pandora is, so I'll likely use that too. Not looking for any fancy quality yet, but I DO want to playback the CD material to the highest res, which means it will have to be loaded into a computer. So I'm now trying to understand how to set up computer-based play and what the best hookup for res would be for . The CD library would be on one of my PCs, and I have enough disk to rip it all in .WAV if I want (which the audiophile in me would prefer). Don't really care about album art, shuffling, and any fancy stuff and that sort of thing. I just want to sit in the armchair with my i-Pad and access material on my PC. The Peachtree has asychronous USB in and can now accomodate 24/192. 1. If I just rip some CD's to WinMediaPlayer in .wav, plug the PC USB into the Peachtree, and hit play on the PC, will I get tone? Or is there more that needs to happen compatibility-wise? One note / concern is that per David Solomon, the Nova Pre USB does not currently support Win7 64-bit (USB 3.0?) Don't think I have that anyway but I'll check. 2. I understand that I will need a more souped-up media player like JRiver if I want that iPad control and I've discovered the JRemote app already. Is this best, or is there a better way? Also, would the choice of media playing software have any effect on sound quality given the steup I have outlined? 3. Or, can I just use the Sonos box to stream everything into the Peachtree? What are the transfer rate limitations of the Sonos wireless? 4. Overall, I understand that I will probably not get all the way to 24/192 or whatever it is for my material via wireless (would prefer not to have a laptop sitting on top of the stereo in the living room) but how close can I get? 5. Do the following connections make best sense for achieving good playback quality: CD player via Toslink in (may not have a choice), Sonos via digital coax, and computer music library via USB. 6. Is there any reason to consider FLAC besides space-saving? The plane for now is to continue acquiring CDs and ripping them. I do not own any SACD, HDCD or any of that stuff. I listen to Jazz and classical mostly with rock from time to time. I'm not a fan of MP3 streaming or sharing music or any of that youngling stuff etc.. Also, I have a totally separate room for the flat screen TV, the AV, the Movies and all that jazz. Appreciate any help, thanks. What a new world!!
  6. So, simple newbie question: Installing the JRemote app on my iphone or iPad will allow it to control a JR Media library located on a Windows laptop which is USB connected to a Peachtree Nova pre? Does the iphone have to be on my home wireless (as is the laptop), or is that irrelevant (i.e. does control occur thru internet or over home LAN.) Thanks. So new to all this stuff - didn't even know computer audio existed until last week!
