  1. Anyone here tried the new 2018 iPad Pro with a USB-C to USB (A) adapter? I wonder if the iPhoneX (old and new) with their theoretically less noisy OLED screens will be better endpoints than the LCD screens of iPads and IPhones?
  2. I have a Resonessence Labs Invicta DAC\HeadAmp, which is based on ESS Sabre DAC chips. When in early 2013 a firmware update delivered the possibility of listening to DSD via DoP, I contacted Ressonessence Labs with this question: Mark Mallinson asked for a few days to see if he could get an answer and later replied with this: I assume this came from ESS, since there are close ties between both companies. Hope this helps.
  3. I have made the update of the firmware to 6.2.1 a couple of hours ago. I am just using my Invicta with headphones (Sennheiser HD800) in differential mode. Haven't tried, any other combinations. About the sound over my headphones, in differential mode, the loudness has clearly lowered a few DBs, as I have to set the volume higher than before. I feel a bigger change than when I first used the differential mode against single ended, after the feature was made available. I feel that it has larger dynamic range now. More slam. More detail too. My HD800s are now feeling more analytical and less musical with Rock and Pop, but classic Jazz is actually sounding better then ever. Need to listen to it for a few more days, to get my ears/brain used to it, and maybe revert to 5.2.2 again, to get a better idea. After that maybe an email to Resonessence Labs to report the experience and ask if they could provide a little more insight about the changes. P.S. Maybe the Invicta is now more Planar Magnetic friendly and less HD800 friendly!... which is actually the industry trend, right?...
  4. I have experienced the following behavior with a couple SACDs. When pressing to start ripping, the screen freezes and does not advance to the screen with the progress bar, but the ripping process actually occurs though! Just had to check when the led of the pen drive stopped blinking to know that it had finished ripping... It happened with the SHM-SACD of Supertramp - Breakfast in America, and the Ultimate Demonstration Disk Vol 2 from Chesky. Is this a known issue?
  5. I tend to agree with you that most of the loudspeakers discussed in this thread are not bookshelf speakers, but actually standmounts. As to a bookshelf speaker, does anyone have experience with the Vivid Audio V1s?
  6. Regarding DSD, although it has the second lowest score (at this moment), I think that if the titles available in 24/88.2 or 24/176.4, typically DSD to PCM conversions, were also commercially available in DSD, the score would be much higher. And even more so, if some of the analog to PCM 24/96 or 24/192 transfers were also available in DSD!...
  7. Got a reply from Mark Mallinson saying this is a known issue that will be fixed in the next software release.
  8. I am the owner of an Invicta, and recently I've upgraded the firmware from 4.2.0 to 5.0.0. I use it to play music from a computer via USB input. After the upgrade, I've tested playing a DSD128 file, and it was successful, almost up to the end, when there were some glitches to the sound, and the red led blinked. Next I tried to play a 24/384 PCM file where there was noise, like only parts of the file were actually being played, and there were several interruptions per second. The red led blinked all the time. Then I tested with lower resolution files, like PCM 24/192, PCM 24/96, or DSD, and most of the time the music would play, with random glitches, and the corresponding blue led blinking at that point in time, like the stream via the USB input was having synchronization issues. I could even reproduce this behavior with 16/44.1 files. Up to this point I was using a high powered computer with an i7 processor, with USB 3.0 ports, Windows 8. Next I tested with a low powered netbook with an AMD CPU, and a USB 2.0 port, Windows 7, and most of the time there was silence when playing music, with the led off, with occasional bursts of music for a few tenths of a second. This was independent of the player used. Tried with JPlay and Foobar2000 with similar results. I had to rollback the firmware to 4.2.0, where the issue went away. To go back a little in time, when I've upgraded the firmware from 4.0.0, to 4.2.0, I've noticed that even with the high powered computer, when playing high resolution music files, occasionally, when I'm more busy scrolling through large windows, or downloading data, there can be very short glitches in the music. Can't remember that occurring with 4.0.0. Anyone else has experienced this behavior?
  9. If DSD is not a factor for you, I would suggest checking the NAD M51. Stereophile gave it a Class A status on their Recommended Components list, and from the experience I had at a friends house, I can understand why.
  10. Pro-Ject Media Box S (Box Design by Pro-Ject Audio Systems)
  11. This weekend we had the official presentation of the DCS Vivaldi system in Lisbon, and I had a chat with the DCS representative Raveen Bawa, who seemed very proud of the role of DCS in the DoP standard, and also seemed very confident that the majors are going to convert their catalogs to DSD in the near future, since now the hardware is becoming widely available.
  12. According to the review in AudioStream: So KS will be out of the question if you want to play DSD. You'll have to set it to ASIO.
  13. Has anyone had the chance to test the INVICTA's USB input with an iFi-audi iUSB in-between?
