Hello, I currently own the Squeezebox touch (no mods, running wireless) into a McCormack ALD-1 premap to the Class D Audio Amplifier built by Class D Audio Home page. My speakers are the Gallo 3.1s which also have the Gallo reference SA amp connected for extra bass.
What I dont like: I know because im using the analogue outs on the squeezebox, im dealing with the problem of introducing distortion as I raise the volume to 100%. It has cause a number of challenges with the Gallo SA amplifier, it makes the amp distort in a very bad way. In fact, the analogue inputs on the Gallo are unusable due to this issue.
What ive done to get by: I bought some Harris -12 attenuators that work pretty well with taming the outputs of the Squeezebox which still allow me to keep the volume at 100% so I can soak up all the bits from the digital domain. Im "pretty happy" with this arrangement but it feel like im just putting a band-aid on a gushing wound.
Whats changed in listening habits: I bought an Iphone and fell in love with spotify. I know its lower quality streaming but to my ears, it sounds good. I would love to be able to slap my iphone down on a dock and play spotify on my main rig from my phone (not from the spotify plugin with squeezebox cause it sucks).
So, with all this being said, my overall goal is to fix the issues at hand with the squeezebox and implement a DAC that wont distort my speakers while retaining bit to bit perfection.
Is the peachtree IDac the answer? The Pure I20? Any other suggestions?
