  1. I know it's beside the point, but you can use an appropriate tape to mark speaker placement underneath them, so you normally can't see anything but if they're moved then you've got marks to realign them to. I'm happy to say I have no complaints. My son occasionally changes dials. I very nearly didn't notice that the volume on my headphone amp had been turned up full the other day...
  2. Two of my favourite covers are also Dylan songs: Jimi Hendrix doing All Along The Watchtower (already mentioned) Rage Against The Machine doing Maggie's Farm - this works so well, they bring out the seething anger in the social commentary. I don't think anyone's mentioned this one: Gary Jules doing Mad World (by Tears for Fears). Fantastic version. For those who don't know, this became a Christmas Number 1 here in the UK, after an internet campaign to oust whatever manufactured vacuous drivel it was up against in the charts.
  3. Surprised by some of less positive views on the HDTracks versions. For me, they are the best ones to have. Smooth and clear and true to the original feel (at least my perception of that feel). They also don't have the original vocal edits reversed (i.e. in Break On Through, he sings "She get..." instead of "She get high"). The remixes do sound good, but I don't enjoy the changes - others do. Avoid the 1999 remixes as they're too compressed. They are the redbook discs in the Perception set, alongside the remixes on the DVDs. Note that HDTracks first offered the s/t album in high rez, and later released the full set of albums. I believe the s/t is different between these two releases (I own the new set, and I got the entry for the first s/t release from DR Database, and it's different to my later version).

    Izotope SRC

Thanks for the quick reply Superdad - I'll monitor with interest and try out some of the settings being discussed. Not that I'm asking for any suggestions now, but just to answer your questions - I use an Audiolab M-DAC, a range of music files but all apple lossless, mostly redbook, some 96 and 192kHz, the odd 88.2 (if that's what you mean?). Not sure what A+ settings are relevant, but I'm direct and integer mode enabled, not currently up sampling, not using 'optimising system for playback'.

    Izotope SRC

Hi, would one of you be kind enough to summarise what this is all about please? I stumbled upon this from the Audirvana 1.4 thread. I could read back through that thread, but I'm not sure when this Izotope discussion began and from what I've seen it appears to be evolving. Most of what is being talked about here is way over my head. But is it as simple as trying the settings you're talking about and seeing whether you like the results? Does it only apply if you're using up sampling? Any help would be great for the probably many like me who can see this looks exciting but don't know how to begin to engage with this discussion.
  6. I also have this problem. Very occasional and seemingly random.

    Audirvana 1.4

That's great timing! I was just about to post to say that I'm still having problems with 1.4.5, in particular getting a few tracks into an album and it stopping, and strange behaviour with 'up next'. I'll very happily try this 1.4.5.3. Unfortunately I'm back into the working week now so may not be able to give it a good run for a while, so others will likely beat me to it, but if there's anything relevant to add when I can then I will. Thanks again for your continued efforts on this truly fantastic software.

1.4.4.4 hasn't fixed it for me either. I still get 1 or 2 or 3 songs into an album and it plays the first second of the next song and just stops. Note I'm not playing on shuffle like some, just playing an album normally. Good luck Damien, thanks for your hard work on this.
  9. I haven't explored it properly yet, but it does look like a very nicely designed app, and the pay option to be able to listen to full-length tracks seems like a very fair offer.
  10. I have the 192 version as well, and it's lovely to my ears. Really full of air and effortless. This is a thread about the best HDTracks downloads, and Waltz... comes up a few times: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f8-general-forum/best-high-res-hdtracks-8871/
  11. Oh actually, I see that Wikkii.Org link leads through to it, I'll explore further. Thanks!
  12. I was pleased to see a thread about my lovely M-DAC, and was very surprised by the initial comments. I've never had any problems with it, and I love the sound. My source is a Mac Mini, so maybe that's how I miss any Windows driver problems. I also use a USB to S/PDIF converter, so that may make a difference too. If you're interested, my chain is: Audirvana Plus 1.3.9.11 beta Mac Mini (2011) [Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cable - Figure 8 1.5m] Furutech Formula 2 USB cable, 1.8m Musical Fidelity V-Link 192 (USB to S/PDIF converter) QED performance coax S/PDIF, 1.0m Audiolab M-DAC Chord Crimson 2, 0.5m Marantz PM6004 amp [Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cable - IEC 1.5m] - (passive pass-through) Chord Crimson 2, 1.0m Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear (headphone amp) Shure SRH 1840 (headphones) BTW, where is the "community behind it"? I'd love to see what they're talking about.
  13. Thanks for posting that, was a very interesting read. It's obviously open to all sorts of accusations about experimenter bias and subjectivity (some of which he addresses himself), but I can certainly ignore all that and enjoy the insight. Thanks. Makes me want a DAC that can play DSD natively!
  14. Congratulations Damien on 1.3.9.11. Blips gone and truly wonderful sound. As always may just be my imagination, but the bass on So What by Miles Davis sounds like the fade in and out of each note is more clear. It's like liquid chocolate, beautifully smooth. Each strike of the ride cymbal falls through the air like a gentle shower of sparks. Keep up the excellent work.
  15. Thanks for this. Any chance of posting the DR values, if you have the software to do it? I would just like to compare it to other versions I've got. Do you have any subjective assessments of how it sounds to you? Thanks again.
