    xld album art

I'm not sure where to post this but I'll try here. 2014 Mini, OS 10.10.1, using latest version of XLD to rip cd collection to AIFF. Finally (with Paul R.'s help), got things set up and was merrily ripping away. 20 + cd's later, cannot retrieve album art. Have my Amazon Web Services access key and secret key entered; have NOT changed XLD settings since beginning to rip. Up until now, album art was being tagged without problem; now, every time I try to use metadata to obtain album art, I get: "AWS access key you provided does not exist in our records". I re-entered (several times) the keys; no luck. No xld help site, I went to AWS and found many ?'s with the same problem but they were being asked by software engineers/programmers who speak a different language than this point & click guy. By the way, the problem persists with several common cd's that are readily available. Any thoughts for the simpleton ripper?
  2. Sure,

    *******@yahoo.com

Also, in Itunes 12.x, preference>advanced>itunes media folder, I want to move my itunes library to my d2 #1 and rip via xld directly to it. I don't have an option from the pulldown menu as my d2 #1 is not there (although it is on the desktop so it is mounted). I also don't know how to choose it to be the destination of the rips. Lastly, since CCC only let me choose a source and a destination, how does one rip to both external hdd's simultaneously?

    Sorry to be ignorant.

  3. Hi Farmdoc - I wrote this up and put it into a nice PDF, but it is now too large to upload on the system. Can you send me an email link and I will mail this to you please?

    You can reach me at

    Yours,

    -Paul

  4. Thanking you ahead of time for your assistance.

The only way I'm going to relax is:

    1. several Pilsners in succession

    2. 1/2 bottle of a decent Pinot Noir

    3. heavy drugs

    4. getting this electronic rubik's cube up and running

I'm aiming for #4. Let me know what forum you post on and I'll follow the trail. sb

  5. Well, the first order of business is that you can relax. This isn't anywhere near as complex as you might think. In fact, it is, or at least can be, quite fun! :)

I will get you some screen shots and some settings from my system and post them up to you in the morning. Actually, I may have to post them on a web site or something, as I can't seem to upload any screen shots to this particular area.

    Yours,

    -Paul

  6. THE WHOLE THING. I'm frozen with computer paralysis.

Yes, I'm planning on ripping 450-500 redbook cd's to my music library (d2 #1) & my backup (d2 #2). Using AIFF.

Plan to use itunes and probably A+, but will rip for now and manage playback when I get a USB-Spdif converter. So for now, I'll obsess over the set up.I have xld and CC loaded. Named my external HD's. Not sure how to put library on HD #1 and mirror it to HD#2.

Also, you had some specific ideas for a format to label the music with (that /%A......stuff).

I'm concerned re: having two or three copies of albums/cuts all over the place. Your thoughts on whether Itunes should organize the library, and if so, how. If not, how to organize (xld?).

Lots of things on xld I don't understand...C2?, correction offset?, burst vs. paranoia vs. secure, (no, wait, I understand paranoia!).

Screenshots, if you have them, would be great. As you can tell from my questions, my ducks are flying all over the place.

  8. Well. for the life of me, I can't find it either. Perhaps the images have been flushed from the system.

I can resend them later this evening if you wish. Did you want the settings, or just the tutorial, or the whole shebang? Just a few rather dumb questions though - what is it you wish to do? RIP your CD collection?

It look like you want to mirror the two disks, and that is an excellent idea. With 2TB of drive space be enough for your entire collection? Also, are you wanting to use iTunes plus an Audiophile quality player like Audirvana+, or an just iTunes, or an all in one application like JRMC?

Best of all, though, relax. It's pretty easy once you get all your ducks lined up in a row. That part is, of course, the most difficult part. :)

  9. Hi Paul,

    1st post.

Just getting started with comp. audio. Hardware set up (2014 Mini, USB Pioneer optical drive, (2) Lacie d2 TB drives.

Now completely flumoxed by xld/Carbon Copy/ even itunes. Didn't you publish a tutorial on these forums on setups of the above, at one time? I can't find it. If it exists, (and is very basic), could you direct me to it? S Baker

  10. Disclaimer: Being a technical dimwit, I am one of the minions who needs to be spoonfed much of the jargon found on these pages. I am setting up my 1st music server. Bought a 2014 Mac with 16 RAM, wading through all the info on Carbon Copy, Itunes ripping, etc. About to spring for a couple of Lacie d2 Thunderbolt 2 HD for music storage and backup. (NAS and RAID scare me, in my neophyte stage.) My question is: I am one of those audio nuts who thinks cables do matter. I have swapped out power, IC, and speaker cables to A/B compare them, and sat in on Nordost's demo at RMAF. If USB cables to the DAC matter, what about the TB cable connecting the music storage HD (1st Lacie) to the mini? The only 'audiophile' third party TB cable I have found is Synergistic Research's $700 offering. If it does matter how the electrons flow over the 'active' TB cable, why haven't more companies jumped in to praise their wares and increase their bottom line? So, I guess I want to know from those who dabble in this morass, does the TB cable matter, or just use Apple/Lacie's wire.
  11. Keep me (us) up to date with your progress. Have you decided on which HD's to use? I may follow the same route, but need user friendly set up on the TB hard drives so not to tax my limited computer skills (actually, non-existent skills.)
  12. So, mwheelerk, what have you decided? I too, am in the same position, more or less. I'm buying components to set up my system: have purchased a cd optical drive for burning, a Planar display, Berkeley USB Alpha (to mate with my AVA Hybrid dac). Now waiting for the (hopefully) late 2013-early 2014 Mac mini update, which I'll get with a SSD drive and install more RAM. The backup ? has me thinking in circles; no computer or mac geeks out here in the mountains; do I try to configure a RAID system, or daisy chain FW or TB drives, (like you, I'm not a geek and I want to have something that works without fiddling with it all the time, plus my wife wants simplicity in use so she can use it). Let me know where you are at with your decision making....
  13. Good stuff to get me started. I'll probably have a 1000 other queries later on. Thanks again. farmdoc
  14. Thanks, notbald, this had to start somewhere for us digitally challenged audiophiles. I have been a voyeur; thinking about a new cdp (Wadia, Emm, tweaked Audio Resolution,...) until this technology began creeping into the online forums. Discovered this website (Good job Chris) but have been mostly reading it as a foreign language exercise until this post. I have been using Macs for >20 yrs. but am NOT a geek, or even technology literate. So, some more basic questions: Assuming I will be using a Mini or iBook... Which of the ripping options on iTunes are bit for bit copies; and how do you know that from reading iTunes' 'Help'? Is it better to use the Superdrive in the computer to rip, or an external R/W cd drive (which might isolate the ripping from the other 'things' in the computer, i.e. noise from fan, etc.) How do you obtain CD jewel box art when in iTunes on a personal cd you just ripped and match it up to the album? Does it include the playlist? Are the copies ripped to the computers hard drive, then one manually transfers each copy to a external backup hard drive? Does the ripped copy stay on the computer's hard drive? Is this where it is 'played' from, or is the backup copy on the external backup hard drive the source when you hit 'Play'? How big does your computers' hard drive have to be to hold 200 or 400 or ?? number of uncompressed cd's? It seems the Mini's/iBooks' hard drive is quite a bit smaller than the external backup drives. If it fills up with your music, do you have to erase the computer's hard drive and import music from the external backup drive? Is the usb from the computer ->dac or external backup ->dac? Is the best connection from computer ->external backup HD usb2 or firewire (using Mac's)? I had heard the newer Mac's will not support firewire. If I go with a Mini instead of iBook, I know I wil need a monitor. Do I also need a keyboard/mouse? I still feel like a simpleton asking these questions. A guy named David Pogue used (still?) to write "Mac Dummy" books for us older non-nerds to get us on track. Maybe one of you guys who can dumb-down to my level might think of doing that and reaping some royalties.
