  1. Hello, Is this item still available? Is it the Pre version with the analog input or is it the mastering version? Thanks, Garth
  2. I was confused by the computer audiophile acadamy article about windows 7 and J.river 14. Instructions for setting up your computer for bit perfect audio disscussed Exclusive mode and shared mode. I don't remember ever hearing these terms before and I don't know where or how to find them. In J.river media center 17 that I have, there is a radio button that states something to the effect of: allow a device to play in exclusive mode, or something to that effect. I don't have J. river in front of me but is this what the article is describing? If not, please advise. Thanks, Garth
  3. The Grace 920... frankly, the balanced outs turn me off a bit. I woud have to get an addapter to convert to "regular" balanced connections. Also, above my price range new and I rarely see these used. The BMC Pure Dac does interest me but there is no analog input so i'm passing on that one. The Hegel I know nothing about but a quick check reveals no analog inputs either. Viable options so far: Mytek Stereo192-DSD DAC Benchmark DAC2 Wyred 4 Sound DAC2 Peachtree Grand Pre DAC OPPO HA-1 Emotiva Pro DC1 Grace Design m920 Based on my current setup and desires... any clear front runners... any comments? Thanks, Garth
  4. Also, the Peachtree Grand Pre DAC appears to have all the bells and whistles but I don't know if it is a truly balanced design. I would say that I am looking for a "musical" sound that is not fatiguing. Out of these options, any opinions as to which would be the best for me? Thanks, Garth
  5. Hello all, I am looking for input regarding a new DAC for my system. My current system: Synology NAS/C.A.P.S audio PC/Benchmark DAC1 USB/Sonic Frontiers Line2/McIntosh 7106/SalK SongTower (first generation). I am working on getting a fully Balanced system. I am in the process of purchasing a Krell KAV250 amplifier. What I need now is a fully balance DAC with one analog input, a USB input, at least two analog outputs and a volume control. The input requirements and volume are so that I can experiment with using the dac as a preamp feeding directly into the amp. I would like to spend $1100 or less with a max of $1500 if an option seems very compelling. My two front runners are the Mytek Stereo192-DSD DAC and the Benchmark DAC2. These two have everything that fits my needs and I can get used in my price range. Am I missing any other obvious offerings? On a somewhat related note, my CAPS music PC is equipped with the S.O.t.M. PCI card (first generation). What is the maximum sampling rate that I can send to a DAC by USB from the SOtM PCI card? I ask because both of the new DAC’s that I am considering can play DSD files. I have no DSD files but I know that there are ways to upsample ”normal” files to DSD resolution and send to a DSD DAC. I look forward to your comments, thanks, Garth
  6. Again, thanks to all for your help. Filed bad drive with Amazon and already have the new drive. Installed it and worked like a charm. I am in the process of adding files/apps to it now. First is "download Station". What are considered the must have apps or is there no such thing? I am having trouble right now adding the DiskStation to my homegroup but maybe it is not supposed to be in a homegroup, don't know. Is it possibly because I am using Norton to manage my firewall? Garth
  7. IT checked it out for me today, the drive is dead, fun. Now for a really dumb question, is it recommended to return it to amazon where I bought it, or Western Digital? I've not had to return something to an internet retailer before. Thanks, Garth
  8. bplexico, Thanks for the link. I watch some of it. I stopped watching when it progressed far beyond where I was able to get in my set up process. Yes, I followed the steps you quote above. Using Web Assistant, the DS214 was not detected but using Synology Assistant my DS214 was recognized. I highlighted my DS214 and clicked connect which sent me back to Web Assistant where the image of a hard drive is shown with a green Plus sign over it. The text read, No Hard Disk Found on DS214, and a “Connect Again” button is available. Also, there is no light next to either Disk 1 or Disk 2 on the DS214. So it appears that I may have gotten a bad disk. I intent to take it to work tomorrow and see if IT can analyze it for me. There is nothing I have to do to the hard drive before I put it into the DS is there? When I started the DS214 I could hear it cycling over and over again, each cycle taking ~4-5 sec. Finally after ~5-7 min the cycling stopped, the status light illuminated, and the DS214 showed up in Synology Assistant. Thanks, Garth
  9. Ok, I received the DS214 and the WD 2TB Red drive. I placed the hard drive into slot one, buttoned it up, turned it on and got about two steps into the install process and got the following message from Synology Web Assistant: No Hard Disk Found on DS214. There is a button that says reconnect again. I click this and receive the no hard disk found again, etc… I have read that one can check the disk for errors but I don’t know how to do that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Garth
  10. Thanks guys, bought a 2 TB red drive on amazon and should be here sunday or Tuesday. I may have a lot more questions after I get things up and running. Cheers, Garth
  11. Thanks Allan for the link. It seems that Red is better but Green didn’t embarrass itself. One of the things that give me pause about the green is that on the synology compatibility list it is listed as a desktop drive and not a NAS drive. Should this be a concern? I was leaning toward just getting a red drive but on newegg, the 3 TB drives get very mixed reviews as being DOA. On BandH photo and amazon however, it gets good reviews. Thanks, Garth
  12. I have purchased the Synology DS214 and expect it to arrive tomorrow. I had planned to buy a WD Red 2 TB drive at bestbuy as I have a couple of gift cards there. Unfortunately, the WD red drives are only available on their "market place" and one can not use gift cards on Market Place items. On the Synology website they list compatible drives. The only "compatible" drive that I can get at bestbuy with my gift cards is: WD - Green 3TB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive for Desktops Model WD30EZRX. Synology list this as a Desktop drive and not a NAS drive. Does this matter? Is this a far inferior drive to the Red drive or is it basically equivalent? Thanks, Garth
  13. Thank you Kal for the info. Indeed Barr, it is NTFS. Glad to know it will be compatible. Jtwrace, as I understand, reformatting will erase the data on the drive. I may reformat when I get a new computer in the near future if there is a clear advantage. My plan is to get the NAS, get all of my stuff backed up and then remove some of the data from my computer to see If that fixes its sluggish performance. If not, then I will upgrade to a new computer. I think that most of my questions/issues have been addressed by all of you great people. But if you have some words of wisdom to a novice setting up a NAS for the first time, please lets hear them. Again, a brief overview of my system/configuration. Windows 7 PC laptop connected to homegroup via wifi. Windows 8 Pro Music-PC running media center 17 connected to router by cat 6 cable. NAS will be inserted into homegroup by connecting to wireless router by Ethernet cable. External Seagate hard drive plugged into NAS or Laptop as needed. Thanks to all, Garth
  14. Hello Barr, I'm not sure what file format my Seagate is. How do I get that information? My computer is a Windows PC. I'm sure you were plenty clear, its just that I am somewhat of a novice. I can see why they would be called a toaster after looking at a couple. For now I will stick with my Seagate and see how that works out. For my relatively simple scenario, I'm guessing that the 214 is fine and that a 214+ or 214play is not warranted. Thanks, Garth
  15. Again, I can understand the value of computers with multiple SSD and mapping things to multiple drives and so forth. However, I need to crawl before I can run and for me that means using plug and play options from off the shelf. With that in mind, can I plug my 1.5 TB SeaGate external hard drive into the sinology DS214 via a USB 3.0 cable as a means to back up my files on either the NAS or on my laptop? I would like to use this option because I don’t plug it directly into my laptop as often as I should. With the NAS being stationary, I can leave the Seagate pluged in or just plug in as necessary. bplexico, I don’t understand what an external toaster drive is. I think it is the same as the pluggable USB 3.0 docking station that you reference later in the thread but not sure. Is it similar to my Seagate external hard drive? If not, how is superior to my SeaGate External Hard drive for my purposes. Just getting around to replying as it is hard for me to find time during the week. Thanks, Garth
