  1. Steven, Just popped in at my local dealer to pick up a cable today and it just so happened that the Danish Rega distributor was there for an evening of listening to Rega equipment. So I grabbed the chance and described your problem. His advice is to disconnect the coax cable, as he says computers are horrible noise generators and it's common to have problems getting a link when using computer -> coax -> DAC. He says to use the USB. Try it without the coax connected and see if that works. Good luck!
  2. Oops, you're using coax not optical. My bad. Still, it's a weird problem. Too bad it wasn't just the very obvious stuff.
  3. As to why it works when both S/PDIF and USB is plugged in is a puzzler. No idea. But for the other optical the apparent reason would be that you haven't plugged in the S/PDIF cable properly or it's really dirty (that might also be your connector on your computer, if it's a laptop it's very plausible that there's dirt in the minijack). Some S/PDIF cables need to be pushed in firmly in the Rega DAC - try disconnecting it and plugging in again and feel for the click. One of my cables needs a really firm push, the other slides right in. In regards to the USB ... have you tried another cable? Usually that behavior is due to a faulty cable. Or a poorly shielded long cable running past very noisy sources.
  4. Also a very nice amp you're getting. It blew me away when I heard it. Was listening to amps 2x the price (Naim among others), and it just sounded so sweet compared to the competition. Oh, did I mention I have one?
  5. Hi Steven, I was just browsing the forum - not really looking for anything - and I saw your thread. I bought a Rega DAC about a month ago after listening to a few and I'm sure you'll like it if you like the Rega sound already. In my experience both the USB and Toslink interface both perform very well. I've ended up using the Toslink myself directly from my Mac mini and it works nicely. I'm not one of those who believe in jitter as being a big problem and to my ears it just sounds very nice over either interface. I've connected it directly from the Minitoslink on the Mac, no USB -> Toslink converter in between. Try it before you spend money on a converter. Remember, if you do choose to use iTunes for your media playback (and why not, it does a great job!), you have to use some sort of 3rd party software if you're going to be playing high resolution files. iTunes doesn't have the ability to switch from 16/24bit or 44.1/88/192Khz sample rate itself. There is a nice little program though, Bitperfect, which can be found on the Mac App Store for 4$ I think, which works like a charm. Or you can ofc choose to do it manually, but who wants that Also, as I think you mentioned yourself, the Rega DAC only accepts high resolution input on the Toslink and SPDIF interfaces. Have fun and enjoy.
