  1. @firedog, I get it now - there was no USB digital out before.
  2. Just installed the app and my dac confirms the 192 output via coaxial. unfortunately the streams keeps dropping every 10 seconds or so. Assume it's a wifi issue.
  3. Thanks firedog! I don't understand the USB part of your comment - with the app, will, the 24/192 only output via the USB? I'm using coaxial into my dac. My dac doesn't take any USB signal over 16/44.1.
  4. Okay, I bought the squeezebox touch. I'm compromising on keeping my computer on, and maybe one day will build or buy a vortexbox or some other nas or computer that can run as a server. Didn't build a headless player because my rega dac doesn't do hires over USB and I felt I couldn't better the quality of a sbt at the price. The c.a.s.h. player looks good, but pricey. The voyage Linux mpd looks cool, but I wasn't confident the hardware quality would best the sbt. Auraliti may win out one day if they ever sell a server. Adding lms onto my buffalo nas requires way more time and knowledge than I have. Functionally, the Logitech served by my computer over wifi blows away the marantz served by my nas over wifi. First, I can stream all of my files, even the 24/192 albeit downsampled. Even 5.1 flacs are handled (in stereo). Not a single dropout. The marantz would choke on files above 16/44.1. Plus the UI on the Logitech is far and away better than that of the marantz. No more tv or reciever required to listen to music. Sound quality seems excellent. Part of me wants to say that the sbt is a little worse than the marantz, but I don't trust that part of me. I can't imagine what would cause that. The marantz is passing the same digital signal into the same dac and amp and speakers. I didn't do any a/b testing (not that I trust anything other than a/b/x), but from (my faulty) memory things sound a bit smoother, slightly less alive. Maybe I need to burn in the Logitech, haha. Thanks to all for your help. One parting thought - I can't believe how immature the hi res digital home audio hardware market is. Dacs are fine, but players and servers are lagging. Big reliable brands are just dropping the ball and the winners in the space are homebrew or luxury niche. No dedicated server from Logitech. Marantz and most everyone else doesn't do gapless. Sonos doesn't do hi res. Until we see more hi res content distributed to more music lovers I don't see this changing.
  5. Ugh, you're right, I knew there was a reason I stopped considering Sonos. That's what I get for listening to the guy at magnolia.
  6. As best I can tell, Sonos solves this for $400. Any reason I don't want to go with sonos to stream gapless flac hi res via my nas? Digital out to my dac. @chris, I have a nas already which is my backup.
  7. Yeah, but I don't have a hdd - so if anyone knows of a silent nas that can act as a hdd via usb then that would be the better use of money.
  8. So vortexbox looks like overkill. i don't need the ripping solution, and it won't be the playback device either. I just need the nas with lms installed, and the squeezebox. satisfies: -no computer needed to be awake -gapless flac -hi res -remote via android -no tv required Problem: After I buy the squeezebox and the netgear readynas I'm out ~$600. Seems pricey... I guess I could just use my old windows machine...but man, that was a gamer pc and it's loud and draws power. Will squeezebox work if my mac is asleep? If so, that's the ticket. Logitech should make a dedicated squeeze server that connects to a usb nas drive. Wait, I have an idea - anyone know of a silent & cheap nas with usb? I could connect that to the squeezebox touch via usb! Maybe I can just forgo nas and use a portable hard drive to cart my music from office to listening room whenever I rip a cd. This is just nuts. Why doesn't my marantz play gapless flac?! dlna with out gapless playback? morons.
  9. I play them with decible. Vortex box says it supports smb for windows and appletalk for mac. But apple talk is not supported by apple anymore, so how is the vortex box nas appearing among my drives on my mac? I get the files are shared over the network - I don't get how a windows nas talks to a mac to share files.dumb question I'm sure.
  10. Thanks! I already have a large collection of flac files and use my mac to rip (max). So I could use a mac media server like twonky to play the vortexbox files, but how do I get the actual files backed up onto my main machine? If I continued to rip on my mac, how would I get the files onto the vortexbox?
  11. Thanks. You guys are awesome, but also a bit too advanced for me. This is all pretty new to me (and I've built my own PC's)...So thanks if you bear with me... I have an old windows machine laying around. I may try loading that up with vortexbox and LMS and buying the squeezebox - though not very green - draws power, always stays on, needs a monitor...clunky Problem is that my main machine is a mac, and I don't know an easy way to share the flac files between the two. Any tips? Would the vortexbox appliance make it any easier to share files with the mac? I saw appletalk is no longer supported. Auraliti looks great, but pricey
  12. I want to stream hi res flac from my nas to a server. -my nas is noisy, so seperate room (or suggest a silent nas) -don't need analog out, have a rega dac -dont want my TV to be on, prefer control via android -don't want my computer to be on to listen to music -gapless flac playback -ideally under $1k No to squeezebox due to pc needing to be on, right? No to my marantz sr7005 due to no nice Android app and requiring TV for decent interface and no gapless flac playback No to olive media for price Yes to anything? How is this not possible? What am i missing? Thanks!!
  13. Yeah, I'll create a wired connection, though it means adding a box. I can't move the airport extreme because it needs to connect to the modem in room a, but I will add a router to the airport express in room b then connect the nas and the marantz to the router. Shout if this is a bad idea. Thanks!
  14. Thanks mayhem, With the airports as servers, how do you control the music? I did try eliminating the Rega DAC. The Prima Luna has a home theatre pass through which I also use for watching TV/Movies. In the pass through mode the Marantz controls volume but the Prima Luna is the amp. I used this connection to easily test the Rega. The Marantz needs to be in Ultra Pure Direct mode or something, where it shuts off all but the essentials, to sound any good. With the Marantz properly configured I must admit I can't hear any difference at low to mid volumes, however the Marantz volume needs to be pushed to the max to get decent volume from the integrated.
  15. Thanks everyone. @Jud, I could try connecting my laptop via USB to the DAC to test fewer boxes. I'm not sure how I would know if jitter is a problem short of an A/B test. I can't find specs on the marantz. If optical is spdi/f then why would converting it help? I'm all for minimizing boxes, but I'm not sure how I would. Is there a better way to get the music on my computer in room A to my hifi in room B? @mayhem, your diagnoses of upgraditis is correct, but I'm also just trying to learn and improve. I wasn't sure if there was some common wisdom that I wasn't aware of, like "never stream over wifi" or something.
