  1. Well, I'm not sure if anyone (Cebolla) is still listening to this thread - I'm almost 3 years late in finding it BUT..... I figured most of what's covered here the hard way. First, my components are: Router -> Synology NAS -> Oppo BDP-93 -> W4S DAC2 DSDse -> Symaudio 330A PA -> Dynaudio X38's. I have a Windows 10 PC running FB2k using the foo_UPnP plugin running as a server/control point (output set to NULL); the stream settings all support lpcm up to 192k, 16 bit (because WAV support was removed in the Oppo so can't use that and 24 bit); and the Oppo is set to Playback Stream Capture. The Synology 212j+ is running Media Server and serving up WAV, FLAC, DSD, etc. All that being said, my DAC always shows the max 192k on the front panel (no matter what I'm streaming) but my question is when I listen to a source file of 44k or 96k, etc. is the file remaining bitperfect in this configuration? Is it being upsampled somewhere? And the bit width is being truncated from 24 to 16 bits? This is all an exercise for a simpler interface/solution for all my different resolution and file types on my NAS as an alternative to possibly buying a microRendu to replace a PC as a USB source to my DAC. I hope I included all the important details AND someone out there is still listening. Thanks!
  2. Addendum to my post to earnmyturns - I should have said the DSD to DoP encapsulation is performed by the W4S device driver rather than fb2k.
  3. Thank you EarnMyTurns - nice to get useful information from someone a few miles away (I'm in Los Gatos). I've been running the MediaServer since the beginning using both my Sonos and Oppo as clients. I didn't think the uRendu would be just another client. However I was (am) unsure about who does the encapsulation of DSD into DoP packets if there is no media manager like FB2k to perform that function but Sonore says don't worry about it - it will be done in the uRendu. Still researching your suggestions for control points to install on my laptop. Thanks again - you helped a lot
  4. My Synology 212j runs Linux and I have been using it to just serve up files to a PC running foobar2k as the music manager. I believe the Atom processor does not have enough horsepower to run a media manager as well as supply hires files without dropouts. Am I wrong in thinking this (Synology has discontinued this model but it runs flawlessly in my current configuration). I feel this may be the wrong forum now to ask questions as to what media software people may be running on their Synology servers (but I just did . Thanks!
  5. OK, then two points I still don't understand - 1) when you say "work out the server on the NAS", what do you mean? 2) am I correct that the microRendu does the conversion of .DSF and .DFF files to DoP? I'm close to understanding but I need this clarification. Thanks!
  6. I'm new to this thread and am hoping this topic wasn't previously discussed - I'm running a Synology server to a W4S DAC-2 DSDse via a PC and would love to replace the PC with your uRendu. In order to play DSD files I need something to repackage the DSD into DoP containers in order to send them on to your product. W4S tells me new firmware is in the works that will run on the uRendu. Is this true and do you have a timeframe? Also, are there other options I have overlooked that could run on the Linux based Synology? If I didn't care about DSD, could I just connect the Synology to the uRendu and play my hires FLAC files? Sorry for all the questions
  7. What a pleasant journey down a crooked memory lane! As many other Marinites (always hated that reference) I passionately remember the Sons and so many outdoor, sun-bathed performances around the county and just as many indoor shows. They played my high school (Redwood) and I saw them last about 13 years ago at the Brookdale Lodge in the Santa Cruz mountains and even a show at the long closed Palookaville in Santa Cruz in the 90's. At the show in Brookdale, I was with that long-lost guitar phenom from Pyewacket you mentioned - Mark Moulin. Mark and I grew up as neighbors in Corte Madera and formed our first band in 8th grade called The Clouds. The name changed to the Wrong Way as we entered Redwood and soon after I dropped out. Mark went on to play in the trio, Pyewacket and was an opening favorite of Bill Graham at many Fillmore shows. Mark know lives in SoCal and is still a mentor to many aspiring guitarists. He frequently had Bill Champlin to background vocals, organ, and guitar work on some of his solo recordings. Another neighborhood musician from those bands was Marty Feutsch on bass - and would go on to play in the Son's late 70's and 80's reincarnation as Yogi Phlegm who played shows at Pepperland in San Rafael (Litchfield's) opening for acts such as Pink Floyd. He would also be part of Maria Muldaur's touring band in the 80's. He still lives in Corte Madera. There are probably several more memories ricocheting around my brain but like many others who grew up in Marin and the Bay Area in the 60's and 70's, the memories have been dulled by altered states while listening to "Get High". BTW, Bill has an FB page and he and various music friends still play nationally, abroad, and locally - even a Son's reunion at Rancho Nicassio occasionally. Thanks again for stirring up some of those memories Gilbert! RIP Jim Preston!
  8. I'm following this thread closely as it is helping me to setup the exact NAS configuration I've been considering - a Synology 211j connected to a Netgear router and serving my music library to my Oppo wirelessly. My question to Toddc2's last post is "what kind of Seagate Barracuda" model did you purchase? I'm nervous about buying any drive with a warranty less than 3yrs and would prefer 5yrs. The perfect candidate would be a 7200rpm/64mb cache 3.5" SATA with a 5yr warranty under $200. I'll continue following how you structure your Diskstation folders as I am also buying HDTracks content and using FLAC format for my entire library. Thanks, Hooked On Audio
  9. I've been researching NAS choices for several months and narrowed it down to the Synology DS-212j or a cheaper Buffalo Linkstation - both would be 2TB. But if I go with the Synology I would like to know the brand/model/specs of the drives you have chosen to use. Were they the same when you went from the 712 to the 209. I would be sourcing wirelessly to an Oppo over a Netgear router. I may be overthinking the drive requirements but this thread has caused me to think maybe not. Thanks, HookedOnAudio
  10. Harry - I am new to this forum so am not sure if everyone will see this comment. I'm also considering the same choices for a NAS solution. I am planning on streaming directly to my Oppo. I am currently using Asset UPnP DLNA server as part of my dbPowerAmp package from an external USB drive connected to my Windows Laptop as a trial platform before purchasing a Synology and copying my music library over. My reply from Oppo about compatibility with NAS was: "As long as either your NAS or your computer is running a DLNA server for your shared content, then the player will be able to recognize and load your files over the network. The player will not work, however, if the server is SMB or NFS based." I would like to run the Synology in RAID 0 or 1. Anyone know what size drives I need for a 2 bay server to get a total of 2TB of storage? Would like to know what you decided and if anyone else has comments before I pull the trigger and buy the Synology. Thanks, Bob
