  1. I live in the sticks where I-net service sucks. Over the period of a night I can wake up to a music download. But, streaming? Forget about it.
  2. Well hey...how's that Justin Timberlake sounding?
  3. Too bad the Dead's best stuff didn't happen in the studio.
  4. I can't speak to Schiit Audio's upgraded models, but I did have the Gungnir and the UD-501 in my system for about a month before deciding to go with the UD-501. I felt the Teac was a better all around DAC. To me, in my system, the Teac was more true to the music. I felt the Gungnir colored the music more (seemingly rolled off highs and exaggerated bass). On the other hand, I can totally see why someone else might choose the Gungnir over the Teac, depending on personal tastes.
  5. I purchased my UD-501 through a TEAC dealer. I don't know if it would help, but for US sales you might try contacting Liquid Audio here: http://www.liquidhifi.com/contact.html . That's where I got mine for a good deal under what I've been seeing at the vendors you listed.
  6. I was just looking through my UD-501 manual and saw that the spec for the USB input is claimed to be USB 2.0 compliant. EDO and USB might be doable.
  7. Let me clarify...I know that EDO loaded on the SBT will work with the TEAC and play up to 192khz if you use the coax output of the SBT. I am currently doing this. I presume that EDO loaded on a Touch will not allow you to use the USB connection on the SBT to output to the TEAC. I presume this, because a) I can't get it to work and b) comments made on the EDO thread in the Slimdevices forum seem to indicate that DACs not using the standard USB protocol will not be able to work with EDO. Because the TEAC requires a proprietary USB driver to work on a PC, it is a good indication that TEAC has used a proprietary USB protocol on the UD-501. This is all that I am basing my presumption on. However, I may be completely wrong.
  8. Thank you for your responses. I think TarnishedEars probably has it right and the TEAC does not have a second analog stage, which is too bad, because I would like to run signal to my subs from the DAC. Signal from the line outs on my amp work too, but I would like to be able to skip the extra run.
  9. That is my experience as well. However, it appears that with the UD-501 you must select which output you want to use by making a selection in the DAC's menu. Unfortunately, I'm unable to try it out, due to the fact that I'm not set up with balanced gear. Actually, this brings up another topic. Do these XLR to RCA adapters work?
  10. I received the TEAC yesterday. So far, so good, but I'm still learning how everything works. Does anyone know if the RCA outs and the balanced outs can be used at the same time? It appears that only one output can be used at a time. Is this correct?
  11. I have PCs and plan on purchasing JRiver, unless there is a better suggestion.
  12. Sure, I can give you guys my impression of the TEAC. It shipped yesterday and should be here Friday. A quick overview of my system looks like this: Squeezebox Touch -> Schiit Gungnir DAC -> Mapletree Audio Preamp -> Red Wine Audio Signature 30 Amplifier -> Omega Super3 Bipole Speakers. The second output on the Gungnir runs to my bass system, which is a Burson buffer stage -> Class D Audio amplifier -> (2) Hawthorne Audio Augies in an open baffle config. So, I can compare PCM on the TEAC to the Gungnir and a Bolder modified (analog) Touch. You'll need to give me some time though. I'll need to learn how to get a DSD stream from my laptop to the TEAC. This will be my first experience with direct computer audio, sans the Touch. Also due to arrive Friday is a Red Wine Signature 15 that I bought off the used market. This could be a fairly major change in my system (or not) and perhaps I shouldn't make any comparisons using it in the chain, as my ears might be overwhelmed by the new gear.
  13. Not the the price...Sears! You can buy the damned thing at Sears. And, btw, I got mine for almost $75 less than the Sears price, and my shipping was free.
