Desktop stereo speakers V 5.1 speakers/5.1 soundbar
miggyboys replied to miggyboys's topic in Headphones & Speakers
The cost comparison is a fair one - there are more speakers in the 5.1 system, hence the difference in cost to equate similar quality. In the same way, AV receivers and their stereo capabilities are compared to stereo amplifiers that are one third of their value to equate comparable quality. Thanks for your thoughts!- 5 replies

Hi everyone! Has anyone had experience of using small 5.1 speakers (like Boston Acoustics Soundware XS 5.1, Cambridge Audio Minx Min 12 or a soundbar like Yamaha YSP-2200), that are no taller than 10cm / 4 inches versus a pair of stereo desktop speakers like Polk Audio S10, Ruark Audio MR1, Q Acoustics 3010, Wharfedale DS-2 or even Wharfedale Diamond 9.0, all of which aren't taller than 25cm / 10 inches? Which in your experience sound better for listening to 5.1 audio? All the desktop speakers above cost less than £330 / $430 and the 5.1 speakers cost less than £800 / $1050. I know for stereo music, the stereo speakers above would beat the 5.1 system hands down. I also understand the stereo pairing can't play all the audio of 5.1 What are people's experience and thoughts on which sound better overall for 5.1 audio? Thanks

Bitstream via HDMI from nVidia or AMD graphics cardsPUs

Thanks Bdht for the DAC confirmation. I've configured the 5.1 setting in Windows Sound on your suggestion which has changed the LED light on my sound bar to signify DTS, LPCM etc!- 27 replies

Bitstream via HDMI from nVidia or AMD graphics cardsPUs
miggyboys replied to miggyboys's topic in General Forum
Well everyone, thanks for helping me get partly to where I want to be. I am now bitstreaming DTS-HD MA and other HD audio to the Yamaha YSP-2200, having trialled JRiver. I've another question, just to clear something up. If I'm playing a game, the sound is output in PCM as the games themselves don't have bitstream options. Does this still mean that my Yamaha YSP-2200 sound bar is handling the D/A conversion? And is this always the case if one is using a GPU HDMI output as I believe GPUs don't usually contain DACs? My setup is: (PC ---> Nvidia GPU ---> HDMI out ---> Yamaha YSP-2200 sound bar) Thanks!- 27 replies

Hi Bdht Thanks for the reply, I have got Nvidia HD audio installed. Are you saying that only certain applications (like PowerDVD, JRiver, Netflix etc) allow bitstreaming if they have the option to control/select it? Thanks for the offer of help also.- 27 replies

Hi Kal Does this allow you to bitstream audio? If so, how? Does Windows Sound or the motherboard software give you the option? Secondly, if you also have a GPU installed, is it easy to force graphics only on the GPU and audio on the motherboard?- 27 replies

I understand what you're saying and your insight is fascinating. It's interesting to hear that DTS has to be converted from compressed PCM to decompressed PCM before it hits the DAC, whether the DAC is internal or external. Do you swear by the fact that it doesn't matter where PCM decompression takes place? If what you're saying is true, how can one ensure that if PCM takes place in a source device, that it doesn't also then use its DAC to convert the audio to analogue? My understanding was always that if a device is set to PCM, the DAC will also take place in the same device. I've rarely seen devices that offer options of only decompressing the audio file to uncompressed PCM but not converting the same to analogue. I'm still keen to find out if there is a way of HD 5.1 audio being output in bitstream by the GPU. One advantage is that my soundbar or AV receiver will confirm to me what file format is currently being played, whether I'm gaming or watching a film.- 27 replies

I don't think this is correct - firstly, PCM isn't fine if you don't want the source device to decode the audio. Clearly, some devices have better decoding abilities than others and in my case, my external device (Yamaha YSP-2200 or Denon AVR-2310) would be far superior at decoding DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD and other audio than my internal component which is an nVidia GTX 1060 6GB graphics card. Secondly, PCM isn't how all audio is bitstreamed, there's a fundamental difference between the two, hence why products like blu ray players and PS4s have PCM or bitstream options. I do care about audio quality, hence why I've asked the question about whether it's possible to bitstream from a GPU to AV receiver....- 27 replies

Hi all! Q. Has anyone managed to bitstream their audio via HDMI from their graphics card? I'd like an external device to decode all sound from my PC (either an AV receiver or soundbar, both can decode all the common sound formats up to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA). I received an email from nVidia today to state that my graphics card (nVidia GForce GTX 1060 6GB) only outputs sound in PCM. I've asked nVidia and AMD if any of their GPUs allow audio to be output in bitstream. I'd happily move to AMD if the RX 580 / Vega 56 did allow bitstream or look at a sound card that enabled the same. Thanks for your answers in advance!

Hi Solarflight You've got some nice speakers - what's driving your speakers in terms of amplification? -
Paul and Johann...happy new year to both of you. So you have differences in opinion - let's leave that behind! Many thanks to both of you for your viewpoints and instruction.
