Slightly dissapointed... on opening the ADI-2 it appears I have an earlier version of the box, so I can't cable jump the volume pot to control the back ports (rather than just headphones). I'm left with the headphone output - TRS L&R > RCA x2 or get a passive volume control, is the headphone socket a bad idea? at least its unbalanced. I really like the music and movies mixed on dynaudio gear and I'm hoping that I'll therefore like the MC15s. will find out soon. __________________________________________________________________________ I'm surprised that there's bias for balanced, isn't it about objective listening in a reference environment (pro gear tends to have a very flat response) vs subjective, hi-fi listening to wallow in? I think both are very relevant. I would have thought that if you want to get as close to the artists mix as possible, you'd go balanced, as they will mix and record on balanced gear.

thanks! @4est - I've ordered some XLR>RCA adapters for the dac. Fortunately it's possible to switch the volume control to the XLR's on the ADI-2. I'm curious why you'd stay away from the unbalanced headphone socket? , I ordered a TRS L&R > RCA too, just to try. @Julf - I Pray for humless joy! Thank you - the Rane document is interesting, it seems lots of equipment development use balanced vs unbalanced to define professional vs hi-fi audio equipment - Dynaudio included (bit surprised that their new Xeo's don't have balanced inputs as well) 0 /| /__________________________________________________________________________ In human terms it seems obvious - "The dude on the wire is balanced." "The dude on the wire is unbalanced." Maybe its a bad choice of vocabulary, but, I know which I'd rather be... I just can't afford it at home yet! I would only work with balanced though. Thanks for the help, very much appreciated. Looking forward to getting the MC15s moving.

...for the fantastic help from you 3, what a great forum! @4est - I found this from RME: 'When using unbalanced cables with TRS jacks: be sure to connect the 'ring' contact of the TRS jack with ground. Otherwise noise may occur, caused by the unconnected negative input of the balanced input.' @Elk - found some Cardas XLR to RCA adapters they do a full range of TRS and XLR to RCA male or female adapters. Elk - '(The RCAs on the unit are S/PDIF in and out)' d'you mean the dynaudio's? apparently they are " Analogue RCA input" @Julf - very interesting, so is an adapter like ^Cardas one^ doing the same as "The Absolute Best Right Way To Do It" as Rane describe? by Chassis tying to both ends? ________________________________________________________________________ - also, in my reading, the phones output on the front of the ADI-2 is fed from the DA-converter, Unbalanced 1/4 inch (119 dBA SNR) (30 Ohms) up to +19 dBu output level. This can be used as Line output, "..an adapter TRS plug to RCA phono plug, is required...[see attached]" This seems like the best solution? Where can I find a good quality cable to do such a thing? or should I whip out the soldering iron? The phones option gives the added benefit of volume control (which the MC15s don't have). I'm still curious if I can adapt the XLR outs to expand this system. Thanks for the all the advice, much appreciated.

Hey 4est, the RME ADI-2 has: Output DA: 1/4" TRS jack and XLR, servo-balanced, DC-coupled signal path.
