Bel Canto e1-DAC1.5 - Questions!

I have recently purchased a Bel Canto e1-DAC1.5. I need your help please on how to select the up sampling rate. When on DAC mode, the Display button scrolls between SPDF1, 48, and L 1.02. What is this 48 and the L 1.02? What are the benefits on using the XLR output over the RCA output? Thank you
