My mac can no longer update iTunes. Everything else updates fine. Is it possible its related to BitPerfect?
  4. Radio Shack Optimus Pro LX-5 if you can find them. Linaeum tweeter.
  5. Other than the addition of a Memory Player 3 or 4 years ago, my system hasn't changed since getting the Theta in the late 90s. (Other than the very important addition of a PS Audio Power Plant Premier a few years ago which transformed the sound of the Theta.) So I'm never seduced by "modern is good". The Memory Player is the best thing I've ever heard (and I've heard a whole helluva lot). But its a standalone digital player, it doesn't take additional inputs from anywhere else. Its like a turntable that way, whereas the Theta is a more flexible DAC. The Theta does do one thing better than the Memory Player - the dynamic oomph of the bottom few octaves (which it does better than anything). I'm not at all convinced that its more real down there, but its big fun. I've started talking to the MP's designer about increasing the power supply strength of the MP's computer to hear what happens. Some of my friends who build professional recording computers do a lot of work with power supply improvements, which of course is ultimately what the Power Plant is as well. I'll have to ask Neil or Dave Kerstetter about the 20-bit question.
  6. The Gen Va does 96/24. Thanks.
  7. Might be related to this phenomenon: http://www.npr.org/2012/01/29/146053943/on-amazon-an-uneasy-mix-of-plagiarism-and-erotica
  8. Thanks. If anyone cares to discuss the actual device, rather than lack of theoretical knowledge, I'm happy to share what I know from a few years of using it. Otherwise, have fun with yourselves and play nicely.
  9. Thanks. That's what Neil Sinclair suggested too. How do you guys find the sound?
  10. Its a good question. And no, I'm not gone because until I get the information I'm seeking, my account bombards my email inbox with all this crap. The phenomenon of over-compression is the result of the structure of record companies changing. For quarterly dividends to grow regularly, the fight for an ever bigger slice of an ever-smaller pie on the part of the ever smaller number of record companies demands more aggressive marketing. It isn't intended to work for people who care about sound, its intended to get the attention of kids who can spend their parent's money elsewhere. Your argument about theory is theoretical. It means nothing until you have heard it and know what you're talking about. You dislike terms intended for marketing purposes? Look around you. Where's that damn "block" button? I'm already fed up with this rudeness and lack of curiosity. If you run into me somewhere, please have the decency to pretend we've never encountered each other. You haven't made a friend here. Nice going.
  11. Hello. I found this forum looking for some information. I'm going to directly pose a question to those more experienced with computer audio than I am, and hope that it will not get mired in garbage like the one topic I participated in yesterday. By now there are probably a few people who know that their opinions aren't worth my time. And where's the block button? I apologize in advance for my crankiness about that. My question is this: I have a Theta Digital Gen Va DAC. What it does it does very well. Having to replace it completely troubles me greatly. I'm very bothered by the fact that so much of what we do results in yesterday's spectacular technology ending up poisoning someone's water table. ( I still use a 1989 Proton CRT TV). But these days I use the Theta only for DVD and LDs. For sitting down and really listening I use a Memory Player, which is kind of like putting on vinyl and just as good. But I'd like to be able to use the Theta as a general DAC, maybe with a Sonos or streaming from a Mac Mini or the like. I wonder what other folks have done to keep their last-century DACs in regular use. What has worked for you, what has sounded better than something else, that sort of thing. Thanks.
  12. It seems to me that the disrespect and sophomoric behavior began in the 2nd comment. The world is filed with experts and those who self-market their "expertise", usually just to make themselves feel more effective in some ineffectual manner. And now my email inbox is filled with egoistic comments, more marketing of expertise, and yet not one comment based on a second's real experience, just theory objecting to theory. Hooey. Someone has aimed a comment at me about "compression guys" - as if that has any meaning at all. I believe that probably infers some kind insult at mastering engineers. There is not a mastering engineer in history who hasn't used compression. I'm a musician. Calm down, people - put some pants on, get out of your mother's basement and go find one of these to listen to. All else is swagger to compensate for male inadequacy. If doing that is really not of any interest then posturing on the topic is wasted bandwidth. If the discussion isn't about hearing music better, its a waste of time. I found this site looking for information for streaming audio into the main system. I thought I might learn a little about things that were more consumer oriented, and not working (and costing) at a high professional level. I spend most of time in professional forums, where this kind kind of hubris had better be based in some kind of reality or it gets thrown out quickly. But I'm not going to learn anything from "experts" that behave like this.
  13. Well... I think I'm sorry I found this site. No - I know I'm sorry. Enjoy yourselves.
  14. So I guess I have to speak up. I've made records for decades. The day I first heard it, I immediately ran out to retrieve CDs of records I'd made. I later called one of my collaborators to tell him that listening to our work on this thing was the closest I'd ever heard to the original analog 1" 2-track mix at our studio. I've had numerous professionals over and several have remarked that - using standard redbook - its like hearing the output of a recording console. For what its worth. Nonetheless, this being the interents, Im sure there are others who know better, regardless of direct experience.
