  1. Thanks for the replies everyone. If I can I will give them a listen before buying, but I'm considering buying used and that makes listening first a little more tricky. I've actually been leaning towards the Peachtree for a while, but I'm intrigued by the Parasound Z-Dac. Unfortunately, it's new enough that I can't find a single review of it, and the posts I've seen from buyers remain pretty vague at this point. Maybe I should either wait until more info comes out on the Parasound, or I could always just flip a coin. Thanks again, andrew
  2. Anyone want to push me in one direction? Or send me in another? I listen mostly to rock/alternative and jazz. I already have a MF V-link converter, so I'm not overly concerned about jitter/usb problems. I'll be running into an Adcom preamp/amp. I have a set of paradigm monitors now, but I will be buying a pair of Ascend Towers soonish. At this moment, I really don't want to spend more than $500. Thanks for any suggestions... -andrew
  3. I'll make sure to pick up the book and read it when I have a chance. Obviously, I'm a bit of a neophyte here. Cheers, andrew
  4. Thanks again for the replies. I should confess that I really am quite pleased with the overall sound of the current system. I think the atoms sound great for the $300 I spent, and if I go with new speakers, chances are I'll upgrade to better paradigms. My original question betrayed a bit of audiophile disease: it can always sound better. I'll try playing with the settings a bit as well. Does anyone think it makes sense to go with a new amp or dac before new speakers? Happy listening, andrew
  5. Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I'm leaning towards a new set of speakers now. Here's what I'd say about my sound. Overall, I'm actually quite pleased. The room itself isn't that big (maybe 25x15) but it has a fairly big archway that leads to the dining room and kitchen. The sub itself is placed in a corner and the crossover is set to about 55. I've actually been quite happy with the integration of the sub and speakers. It doesn't sound like I'm missing much and the bottom end sounds pretty tight. However, I do feel like when I have it at louder volumes, it's not as clear or clean, like it's straining just a little bit. I assume a more powerful speaker would help with this. Does that sound about right? Thanks again, andrew
  6. Hi everyone, I'm thinking about purchasing either the Peachtree dacit or the DacMagic. My current system has me going from my laptop to a V-link, and then straight into an HK 3490 receiver via optical, utilizing the internal dac. I have a pair of paradigm atoms and a HSU sub. My question is, is buying an external dac the next logical choice for this system? Will it improve the sound of the system by much? Or, would I be better off buying a better amp or speakers first? Or maybe I should just buy a decent turntable? What do y'all think? Thanks, andrew
  7. Hi all, Forgive me if this is tedious, but I would covet your advice on buying a new DAC setup. Currently, I'm using the original NuForce Icon. I'm thinking about upgrading to one of the following combinations: MF V-Link II straight into HK3490 (has a decent DAC) MF V-DAC II I could buy either of these in the near future or save up a little more and get: MF V-Link II + DacMagic MF V-Link II + Peachtree iDAC I guess I'm wondering whether I'm going to hear a big difference between the MF V-DAC by itself and the MF V-Link + the DacMagic or the Peachtree iDAC. Also, any votes on DacMagic vs Peachtree? I know a lot depends on other parts of the set-up, so here's what I'm working with: Lenovo laptop, the aforementioned HK3490, a Hsu sub, and Paradigm Atoms. I'd like to eventually move to a better amp, but that's going to take a while. Any help would be most appreciated, andrew
  8. Hi all, Hopefully, this won't be too tedious a question... Over the past year, I've put together a reasonable system that looks like this: laptop > original NuForce > HK3490 > Paradigm Atoms and Hsu Sub Although I am quite happy with the set-up, I have acquired that audiophile disease where I'm thinking of how to step it up. My questions is, what would be the best thing to start saving up for next? Here are some options I'm thinking about: 1) Buying a decent usb/spif converter so I can utilize the dac in the HK. 2) Buying an HRT streamer to replace the NuForce (analog into the HK) 3) Saving a little longer and buying a Dacmagic, Peachtree dac, or V-dac II (how much of a difference would I hear?) 4) Really saving up (couple years) and buying an amp in the 1K range. or different speakers or... Any of these options look better than others? Or should I be thinking of something else entirely? Thanks, andrew
