  1. Bump. Is there a way to undo the changes made once this script is run? Does it remain in effect after a reboot?
  2. You need to enable the Windows Event Log in the Services management console (ctrl-alt-del, start task manager, click the Services tab, click the Services button, scroll down to the Windows Event Log, double-click it, change it from "disabled" to "automatic", apply, then hit "start"). Should be good to go then and on subsequent reboots.
  3. Managed to fix this by manually enabling the Windows Event Log service, which is a dependency of the Mytek Digital Host Service. I actually hadn't seen it listed in the dependencies, but found the culprit by simply enabling groups of services until the problem went away, and narrowing it down from there. Also got my wifi adapter working in the process, though I'm less certain of exactly which services I needed to re-enable in that case. Think I'll just forget about that one for now and get back to the music...
  4. I'm also having issues with a couple of USB devices and this stripped-down version of Windows. With my Mytek DSD DAC, I'm able to install the USB driver fine, and it shows up in the Device Manager. However, when I open the control panel and attempt to change the sample rate or buffer setting, I get the error "USBPAL_STATUS_NO_SERVER." The only other time I've seen this error is when I accidentally had the DAC connected to a USB3.0 port on my motherboard, which apparently does not play nicely with the Mytek. In that instance, simply connecting to another port solved the issue. However, in this case, I've connected the DAC to a variety of USB ports and reinstalled the driver several times, to no avail. I should also mention that the DAC does not appear in the list of available output devices within JRiver. I'm running a release preview version of Win8 on another hard drive, and the DAC works fine on that one. The other device I can't get to work is a USB wifi adapter, an ASUS USB-N53. Again, the driver installs fine and the device shows up in Device Manager and in the list of network adapters. However, I'm unable to see any available network connections. I realize that employing wifi probably goes against the whole point of this audiophile version of Windows, but I'd like to be able to get it to work in order to control JRiver remotely or access my network wirelessly. Any ideas? The good news is that I'm having no issues at all with a different USB DAC, and there is clearly an improvement in SQ with this version of Windows over the release preview I've been running. I'm perceiving greater clarity and transparency, especially in the treble frequencies, over the stock build, which sounds slightly harsh or dirty in comparison. Kudos to you, John Doe, for taking the time to do this, and to those who've helped make it available. -Steve
  5. oops, meant to send private msg

  6. 2010 Mac Mini here, dual booting Win 7 64-bit and OSX Mountain Lion. It's quiet and small, but I've had the Mytek connected to my desktop PC/Hackintosh and to a Mac Pro and thought both sounded better than the Mini (power supply?). Also, some of the Bootcamp drivers are shite. Currently working on putting together a silent system to replace the Mini as a dedicated music player/HTPC.
  7. I hear you, Paul, and I bought it for the same reason (to pair with my Korg MR-1000 which I use for a bunch of different stuff, vinyl recordings included). I don't even have any SACDs! I actually talked to Alex @ Mytek several months before the DAC came out. I was asking him about it and using it in conjunction with the Korg. His response was "What's that?" Maybe I should have taken that as a bad omen, but I think maybe Mytek seriously overlooked Korg DSD users as a potentially huge source of would-be DSD192 DAC buyers. Kind of strange, since there's relatively little released DSD content, and SACD ripping is kind of an underground thing (no offense, Ted--I think it's awesome that that capability exists). Pretty much all of their marketing for the DAC has been tailored to the hifi community (they even added a hifi section to their website), despite Mytek being a pro equipment manufacturer first and foremost. Anyway, I'm sure they'll get it all sorted eventually, in the meantime rest assured it's a tremendous PCM DAC as well (like eye-openingly good in my view).
  8. Hi Paul. We were just discussing this in the main (huge) Mytek thread. The answer is no, you cannot currently play DSD128 on a Mac with the Mytek (USB or Firewire). DSD128 currently only works with a Windows PC using ASIO and the USB2.0 input (or with the SDIF input and a Sonoma or similar workstation). Your software choices are Foobar2000, J River and HQ Player. Michal has said they're working on this but that it could take a while (that was several months ago). The very recent 1.7 firmware did not bring additional DSD128 support, although confusingly, the release notes indicated that DSD128 via ASIO had been added as a new feature (it was actually already added in the previous 1.6 firmware and listed in the release notes there as well). Anyway, I have a bunch of DSD128 recordings myself (glad to see I'm not alone) so I'm hoping this is a priority for Mytek and that we'll see some progress on it in the coming months. Cheers.
  9. I use 4 different inputs on the DAC regularly, so the A,B,C thing doesn't really help me too much. I guess I just find the new interface a bit clunky and preferred how it was before, when my FN1 button was a simple shortcut to the input selection page. Wish there was an option for either method, for people who prefer one way or the other.
  10. Pacwin, I'm sure you're right that a driver update is needed for DSD over FW ASIO, but I'm actually not concerned or fixated with ASIO or FW at all. It's working perfectly well over USB2.0 at the moment, which is good enough for me. But since ASIO is PC only, and since there are legions of people out there who are Microsoft-phobic (especially musicians), I don't think it's the answer in this case, though Miska has previously pointed out valid reasons why full ASIO support would be a good thing. DoP is supposed to be the way forward, and I for one would like to see it prioritized and fully supported by Mytek, including DSD128 and the alternate v1.1 method which Mytek invented (needed by Dice chipset since it's limited to 192k). Actually, I would vote to have the v1.0, 352.8k method working on USB2.0 first, since that method seems to be much more widely supported by software developers at this time. I think it's firmware that's needed for this to happen, though it may be drivers as well, I really don't know. Have you tried the new firmware? Did it bring any welcome features or fixes to you? Seems like the sample rate switching problem would be a big one for some users (which software does that afflict? Amarra?). P.S. I checked, and in Foobar2000, DSD64 via Firewire ASIO works, only if I select the 0x1a or 0x5a markers (or whatever they're called, sorry I'm not in front of that machine), but not "ASIO Native" method. Not sure if there's any significance to that.
  11. Good idea, that's bound to make the proceedings much more bearable! Some good drinking games to be developed there! People ask me why the need for DSD128, what are the sources? The short answer is anyone with a Korg DSD recorder, which have been pretty popular with professional and amateur recordists for everything from mixdown capture and mastering to live recording, tape and vinyl archiving, etc. Those units support DSD64 and DSD128, and most use them at DSD128 because it sounds better at the higher sampling rate. While the crux of the push for computer-based DSD playback has been centered around DSD64 (because it is the SACD standard), I can guarantee you there are more people making DSD recordings with those Korg units each week than there are SACDs being released. I'm sure some of those people would like to be able to catalog their own recordings in a computer and use a DAC like the Mytek to play them back with ease. I can personally account for at least two or three more DACs that Mytek would have sold by now if DSD128 over DoP were working. I've demo'd the Mytek for a few studio owners that use the Korg units for 2-track work. They've been unanimously impressed with the sound, and some have contemplated purchasing one. But when I tell them they won't be able to play their existing DSD recordings with it yet (because they're using DSD128 and Macintosh computers), they're left scratching their heads. My advice has been "wait until the firmware catches up." So, there's definitely a need and a potentially larger market than just audiophiles holding onto large SACD collections and out-of-production PS3s. Mytek and other DSD DAC manufacturers would be wise to take note of that.
  12. I tried out the new firmware, which I'll say upfront I found to be pretty lackluster. DSD128 seems to behave exactly the same as it did before, i.e. it works on USB2.0 via ASIO, but not on Firewire. Still no DSD128 via DoP on either input. I'm still holding out for this, as my preferred software players on Mac and PC support DSD over DoP, not ASIO (which doesn't even exist for Mac). I had kind of hoped that this was going to be addressed in this firmware, since DoP is supposed to be the new "standard" for DSD transmission, and since v1.1 of the DoP standard was conceived by Mytek itself. Oh well, back to the waiting game for me. I noticed a few minor changes in the menus. Personally I am not a fan of the new method of assigning input selection to a function knob. Before 1.7, when I would push FN1 it would bring up the input selection page, where I could see what input I had selected and use the volume knob to change inputs if desired. Now, when I push the FN1 knob it toggles (with a slight delay) between three user-assignable inputs (A, B, C). Some may prefer it this way, but I myself much preferred the way it was, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the option to revert to the old method. The Apple Remote support may be useful to a few people (and maybe a smart marketing maneuver on Mytek's part), but unless you use the preamp function of the DAC, a remote control seems to offer little benefit with this unit. Since there seems to be a consensus that the DAC sounds best with the volume control bypassed, I wonder how many users even rely on a remote. In the meantime, monitoring features like mono, l-r, m-s, etc. still do not work for DSD content, features I think would be much more useful (and which I would expect to work, based on the DACs literature) than enhanced remote support. Overall, this firmware update was disappointing to me. Hopefully it will help those of you with the reported sample rate switching problem (never experienced that myself) but I'll probably be reverting back to 1.6.3b2 since for my purposes they are exactly the same except for the new, more annoying way of toggling input selection with a function button. One more thing, updating the firmware seemed to reset all of my menu selections, so if you do update, make sure you take note of your filter settings, etc. As always, YMMV.
  13. Ted, a quote from Michal's post from June (#1561 in this thread): "In Mytek DAC USB can do 352.8k, but FW cannot. We will probably implement both methods to give users a choice, starting with 352.8k as this already works with Pure Music and other software- pls stay tuned, but it will take a while. If you need 128xDSD today there is ASIO and Foobar." He also stated that "Mytek USB will be able to do 352.8k for the purpose of allowing 128xDSD. Mytek DAC converts PCM up to 192k only." Furthermore, going back to the 1.7.0 release notes, the 1.6.0 release notes printed directly under them says "This firmer fixes various format switching timing issues and adds 128xDSD support to DSD digital inputs and ASIO. 128xDSD per DoP 1.1 standard is not yet supported." So, I'm not sure what is the significant change for DSD128 in release 1.7.0 since it seems to say the same thing that 1.6.0 did. Oh well, time will tell, I guess.
  14. Looks like Mytek has updated its website and posted the 1.7.0 firmware: www.mytekdigital.com (click on the "High Fidelity" link to get to the new stuff). Don't have time to try out the new firmware right now, but this is in the release notes: ---------------------- Stereo192-dsd-dac firmware rev 1.7.0, OCT 15, 2012 This firmware adds the following features: -128xDSD support for ASIO under Windows compatible systems -Firmware failsafe to prevent "bricking" of DAC if update is interrupted or fails -New function implementation of input switching. Now FN1 or FN2 can switch between 3 user defined inputs (analog, usb2, spdif, etc) -Apple aluminum remote support Fixes -Certain samplerate transition issues have been remedied -increase clock recovery and stability when switching formats ----------------------- Maybe I'm missing something, but DSD128 via ASIO has worked for a while, at least for the USB2.0 input. So maybe this adds Firewire support? What we don't have is DSD128 via DoP.
  15. DSD64 works perfectly for me with JPlay 4.3 and the Mytek. Use the Kernel Streaming Audio Interface. If you use ASIO, you'll get loud white noise. In general I would recommend the USB2.0 input with the Mytek while running JPlay--with Firewire, I cannot get dropout-free playback using the Xtream Engine (which sounds the best to me), even with Redbook material. With the USB2.0 input, I can use the Xtream Engine and Directlink with most material (and Minimum Streaming and Buffer settings in the USBPAL Control Panel). For DSD, I keep the Streaming Buffer at ExtraSmall and use Directlink and 4 sample buffer settings in JPlay. Try it out and see how it goes. Unfortunately, I can't get DSD128 working with JPlay and Mytek, but that is probably not surprising since the Mytek doesn't yet accommodate DSD128 via DoP yet, only via ASIO over USB. I thought maybe it would work with the ASIO interface in JPlay, but I don't think they're supporting DSD over ASIO, only DoP. Hopefully the rumored 1.7 update from Mytek will address this.
