  1. I believe that SMB2 became the default file share method with Mavericks but still supports AFP for previous versions and for network Time Machine backups. I think that both iTunes sharing (DAAP) and iTunes home sharing (a variant of DAAP) both use HTTP opposed to AFP or SMB. Too bad it seems like there is no way to support home sharing with a NAS to stream to the default iOS music because it only supports home sharing but I don't mind leaving a computer running. Perhaps their are 3rd party standard DAAP client apps for iOS to overcome this but I don't mind the default app. I imagine with is why others prefer to use SMB servers (run off a NAS with no computer with 3rd party iOS apps) Interesting, I didn't realize that was a benefit of NFS. It looks like some people run NFS music servers with Linux after doing a quick web search. Thanks for sharing, I'll make sure to check it out.
  2. +1 It is more of a curiosity of their SMB method being a geek.
  3. My apologies, I've been reading a lot of different things online stating different things. Do you know if Home Sharing is bit perfect? Thanks!
  4. It actually appears that the CCK has worked with the iPhone since iOS 7 using the 30 pin to lightning adapter or the actual lightning version. Apple doesn't note compatibility but it does work. It also appears that iTunes Home Sharing supports 24/96 on the iPhone: http://www.head-fi.org/t/682222/ios7-iphone-and-apple-cck/15 (This may have also already been discussed hear but I didn't find anything when searching) Still wondering if Home Sharing transcodes all formats to ALAC when streaming?
  5. Thanks for your contribution to this thread. I am aware of this and should have mentioned I am looking at purchasing the Apogee One model that is compatible with iPhone and supports 24/96 directly over the lightning connector. I'm surprised more DACs don't have support without the CCK but assume it is because companies don't want to pay the "Made for iPhone/iPad" fee from Apple. While Home Sharing will stream higher quality than 24/96 to an iPad I'm pretty sure it is then down sampled even when using the CCK before going to an external DAC. I'm only interested in 24/96 and am trying to verify this is also supported with Home Sharing and the iPhone because have read conflicting info. While Home Sharing will also stream higher than 24/96 to the iPhone I have heard it is then down sampled even lower than 24/96 before going to a external DAC.
  6. Thanks for your response! Has anyone confirmed that the same is true with the iPhone using Home Sharing? I have heard it doesn't even support 24/96. The other thread seems to just mention the higher bit/sample rate using the iPad unless I missed something. Thanks again!
  7. Can anyone please confirm if Home Sharing supports 24/96 streaming to an iPhone? I have read conflicted information. If I understand correctly Home Sharing is bit perfect and transcodes everything to ALAC? Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks!
  8. Thanks again for your input Bear! My set up is going to be for 2.1 only and my receiver does have analog pre outs for left/right and sub. The sub has left/right inputs with the left input also intended for LFE. The sub pre out on the receiver isn't labeled LFE so would it be better to split out to both the left/right input on the sub? What type of splitter box are you speaking of and would it be different from a Y cable? Thanks again!
  9. Thanks for your input Bear! Yes, I was talking about using the pre out from the receiver to the sub. My DAC only has one set stereo out and my sub only RCA input and no outputs. In this case do you think it would better to split from my DAC and use the DAC volume control or route through the receiver with DAC at full volume? Thanks again!
  10. I have a Apogee Duet DAC and a non integrated Hafler amp that I will soon be using with some Martin Logan ElectroStatic speakers and a powered sub. *I'm trying to figure out if it would better to split the audio out from the DAC to run to the sub and amp separately or to route through an older Denon receiver? With the receiver I could connect the DAC to the L/R inputs and pre outs from the analog surround sections to the amp with the sub out separate. I've heard that this will provide better quality then using the other analog inputs (ie CD etc) *I'm worried that running through the receiver will worsen the sound but am not sure the effect of splitting the audio straight from the DAC? *I also heard that the Apogee volume control is digital and I will lose sound if it isn't set to max but am not sure if this is true? If so this could be a reason to route through the receiver. The DAC is connected to my Mac laptop via firewire and will be the source for all my music so I won't benefit from extra inputs on the receiver.* Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!!!
  11. Thanks for the suggestion, I will have to download the trials and compare! I still don't see how it's possible for sending bit perfect audio to a DAC can sound different from one piece of software to another unless some additional processing is applied which I'm not against if it sounds good. Still have to do my homework however! Pablo
  12. Very helpful info guys! Thanks once again for your time! Pablo
  13. Thanks for more input guys, I appreciate your time! When I say preamp DAC I just mean an external DAC unit vs the one built into a receiver but I assume I can just say DAC and this is given? (A DAC is considered a preamp correct?) I think I'll pick one up and try with my existing receiver and then go from there and may eventually pick up an integrated amp as suggested. I'm only interested in stereo for my music room and have an older receiver with analog surround inputs. If I understand correctly connecting the DAC to the L/R surround inputs and speakers to the surround L/R terminals should be better than sticking to standard configuration in Direct Stereo mode? Thanks again! Pablo
  14. Thanks for the info Claudius! I will have to do some more research on the matter. Pablo
