  1. The FIM release I'd LOVE to find as a high rez download is "Hush! The Angels Are Singing". Beautiful album. Anyone know if this is available anywhere? "River of Sorrow" is also wonderful and I'm glad it's available now.
  2. I just wanted to chime in with a further report of excellent customer support from Larry and HDPLEX. I've had their LPS for several months, and recently discovered that one of the output sockets on the back was loose with a compromised solder connection to that socket. As I'd had the unit for about 2 - 3 months at that point I couldn't say whether I'd done something boneheaded to cause this (e.g. inadvertently twisting the socket thereby messing with the inner connections - though I'd not noticed anything when using that socket) or if it arrived that way. I emailed Larry about the cost of a fix, fully expecting that I'd be liable for the repair (which was fine with me). His immediate response included a pre-paid shipping label and indication that he'd be sending a new unit that day. I got the new unit in 2 days - even before I had a chance to ship the original unit back to him. Wow - totally did not expect this - and am very impressed with that kind of service. I don't want to promote a nefarious abuse of his generosity by anyone (surely nobody from this fine site) - but wanted to pass along my wholehearted satisfaction with Larry's customer service - and the quality of the LPS. Other than this original glitch - which could've been my fault - the unit has worked perfectly, and seems to be extremely well built.
  3. Has anyone experimented with different power cables feeding their JS-2 - and if so do you find much influence? I've found that various power cables can really change the "sonic performance" of some gear - particularly DACs, preamps and amps. However, it varies - i.e. some DACs are more influenced by different power cables than others - presumably resulting from differences in the design/implementation of their power supply. Given the apparent care put into the JS-2 design I might suspect that its performance is less sensitive to the power cable - but I don't have an extra 'boutique' cable on hand to test this. If it makes a difference I'd happily upgrade the cable - I'm very pleased with the JS-2 already but if there's more goodness to be had I'm all in.
  4. Thanks Damian. Does it matter whether a space separates the # and the subsequent text in each line? Did I understand you and others correctly that commenting out the three specific lines highlighted in my earlier post will likely restore VNC (e.g. splashtop) functionality? Thanks again for your help - and sorry for my ignorance - am trying to learn.
  5. Hi folks - I'm kinda late to the party and pretty naive. Been using the CAD script on a MBP with Mavericks for awhile, but just switched to a MM with Yosemite, and would like to use Splashtop to run headless. However, the VNC doesn't work with the CAD optimization. Somewhere in this thread it's suggested to "comment out" three of the script lines as follows: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.PrivilegeProxy.plist 2>/dev/null sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.alf.agent.plist 2>/dev/null launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.alf.useragent.plist 2>/dev/null I'm presuming the "commenting out" is simply using TextEdit to add in " 2>/dev/null" at the end of each of these lines - then when the script is run again these lines are not enacted. Is this correct? The only text editing I've done previously has been strictly spelled out for me - so I apologize for the naivete. Any/all guidance welcomed. Thanks.
  6. I’m considering moving from a 2010 MBP to a Mac Mini for my music server (that’ll be it’s only purpose). There’s been a lot of discussion regarding Superdad’s (Alex Crespi) approach for running from a boot-able SD card and ejecting the main HD – makes sense. Plan to do that (or similar) along with the MMK PS replacement and LPS use. My question is whether a new model Mini with the PCIe-based flash storage might approximate the SD card performance without the hassle. Alex alluded to this possibility, but I wonder if anyone’s investigated it. Reason for the question it’s almost comparable cost to get a 2012 i7 Mini w/ 16 GB RAM vs. a 2014 i7 Mini with 16GB RAM and a PCIe-flash storage drive. I know the new processors are no longer quad core – but I don't plan to make the machine do any heavy lifting (e.g. PCM → DSD conversion etc. - my DAC doesn't do DSD). Any thoughts/advice?
  7. Thanks for the intriguing post Edward. Can you indicate which voltage-selectable LPS you're using for the NAA-side MC210CS?
  8. I apologize up front for my ignorance – I’m a guy who’d use a “service” as being discussed in wappinghigh’s thread about “plug-and-play HQP/HQ embedded servers” (e.g. I’ve got minimal IT knowledge and minimal time to change that through study…..). I’d like to try using an NAA with HQPlayer, and am leaning toward using an sms-100 for this. The problem is that all associated gear will be consolidated in one room (living room) where I don’t have capability to connect the network router to our LAN via Ethernet cable. Thus, there’d be “mini-network” connectivity between the server/router/NAA/DAC – but no hard-wired internet connectivity. Is there a way that I can still get the HQPlayer/NAA setup to work? WiFi is available to the server (MBP) with strong signal (802.11n). The desired setup would be: MacBook Pro (early 2011 2.3 GHz core i5, 8GB RAM; music library on external HDD (firewire)) > network router > sms-100 > Berkeley alpha USB > Berkeley alpha DAC Sorry for the naïve question – have read a lot here about this, but haven’t found info that leads me to a firm conclusion whether this is workable. Thanks for your help.

    HQ Player

I'm just beginning to try out HQPlayer - really like it so far. One question - is there a way to organize albums in the library based on category (e.g. collect albums of a given genre into separate browseable groups of classical, rock, jazz, etc.)? I've always organized my albums this way - as I'd imagine most here do. Sometimes you feel like classical chamber music, sometimes you want metal - and thus it's nice to be able to selectively browse choices in those distinct genres (especially in the context of a large music collection). Any help would be much appreciated - and I apologize if it's been covered previously (I couldn't find an answer....).
  10. I recently bought a new 4TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro HDD as I need more library space and the new HDD won't stop spinning even when the MBP is put to sleep and thus the HDD gets very hot (thus, I can't use the system for any period of time....). I use a "memory player" for audio (Audirvana) and thus the HDD should stop spinning once a track is loaded into memory. Although I normally disable the energy saver mode (and use the CAD script) the same problem occurs if I disable the CAD script and set the HDD to go to sleep in the energy saver preferences. I purchased two 4TB drives (one for backup) and both show the same problem. This was not a problem with my prior 2TB OWC HDDs of the same model. I'm using FireWire to connect the HDD to my MBP, and the only obvious difference between the "old" and "new" drives is that I was previously using FW400 and the new drive has only FW800 connections. I contacted OWC and they had no information or solution. I'm using an early 2011 i5 MBP with 8GB RAM and Mavericks (OSX 10.9.5). Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a work-around? I'll appreciate any/all help. Thanks!
  11. Wonderful image, Jud. I had the same thoughts 20 years ago on my wedding day and that turned out well. While I didn't keep backups around after the wedding, I'll do so with the A+1 files - hope it doesn't sour my relationship with A+2. Thanks for your help.
  12. The problem is that since I've starting using A+1 in stand-alone mode (beginning maybe a year ago?) I've not kept up with adding new music to iTunes (inclusive of updating iTunes playlists, obviously). I've added alot of music in that time. My library is pretty large, and alot of my music is actually not yet integrated into the A+1 playlists (been doing it slowly - when I want to play something it gets added to an A+1 playlist - rather than taking a weekend to sit and build playlists incorporating the whole library - accordingly the synching feature is one of the major draws of A+2 for me). Perhaps it'd be easier to simply kill the files in question and let A+2 build its library (which will happily include ALL files). I suppose I could just rebuild playlists for A+1 if/when I use the older versions - though that would confound any update synchs by A+2... Guess this means I need to make a full-on commitment to A+2 - yes?
  13. Oh - O.K. So deleting the three files noted by Vitor in post #334 should do the trick (using the delete tactics you noted earlier, Jud)? I apologize for my ignorance here - but by deleting these files will I lose the playlists I've been using in A+1.x.x versions?
  14. I'm having the same troubles that Stefano and Timmermc had - e.g. A+2 crashing while synching. From reading the posts in this thread I get the impression there cannot be any of the A+1 programs on the computer when using/synching A+2. Thus, prior A+1.x.x versions need to be deleted before synching libraries in A+2 - is that correct? Really? FWIW - I'm synching file directly from a 2TB external HDD (firewire connection).
  15. Perfect - worked like a charm - Thank You! I've really enjoyed computer audio for the past coupla years, but it's really shown me my lack of computer knowledge. Great ongoing learning experience though..... Thanks again!
