  1. Just shooting this out there but could the aberration be related to trying to play surround sound tracks? You say it happens in some movies only? On the one's that don't do it ... is it just 2.0 audio?

  4. Thanks Paul. My concern with the Rega has always been its usb limitation. I know that I can buy a USB-to-spdif/coax converter but that idea is not that appealing to me and of course adds extra cost. I was also considering the Simaudio 100D because of its now low cost but the same USB limitation applies. I will have to look into the Peachtree DAC IT.
  5. Hello everyone. I am considering upgrading my digital audio world. I am currently using a HRT Music Streamer II and a Schiit Modi. I have previously used W4S Dac 1 and Schiit Bifrost. My transport will be a Pogoplug E02 running archlinux and using squeezelite as the player (SBT clone). I have two amps (depending on the system) that I use. A Primaluna Prologue 2 and a Creek 5350se. The Primaluna is paired with Dynaudio Excite X12's while the Creek is hooked up to a pair of ADS L880's. With the recent price reduction in the dac's listed in my title I am thinking about making the plunge in a little higher end digital sound. I was hoping to hear from anyone who has owned either of these dac's and preferably both (a longshot I know) and what your impressions were/are. I would also recommend anyone other recommenations for DAC's under $750.00. My listening preference would be something that sounds more like analog (I know this is cliched). I have a ton of digital music but I find myself almost exclusively listening to my records for the past couple of years. Although I don't see my record playing changing drastically I would like to get my digital front end closer to my analog set up. For analog I have a VPI Scout w/ a ATC 09/MLii, Dynavector 10x5, Musical Surroundings Phonomena II, DIY MC stage AD797 (from AK). Thanks!
  6. I have the dynaudio excite X12's which retail for 1200 and are simply amazing imho. I would whol heartedly recommend them. If you are into professional reviews this is a glowing one: Dynaudio Excite X12 loudspeaker | Stereophile.com
  7. I have the raspberry pi and one warning I would mention is that with certain dacs the usb bus on the pi is not fast enough (or powered enough?) to play hi-rez material. My personal example is that with my wyred 4 sound DAC-1, trying to play 24/96 files through mpd on the pi creates hiccups/skips in the music. This is not a processor issue as nothing is being re/upsampled by the pi .. but rather its some kind of data thoroughput ... or bus type power issue. I don't really know the why ... but only that it happens. Moreover, I do believe that this is dac dependent because I can play 24/96 on both my sheevaplug and the pi with my hrt music streamer II dac (with external powered usb hub). But, can't with either on the DAC 1. However, through my desktop or my laptop I can play all hi rez material on my dac-1. My only conclusion is that the the usb bus is cheap, weak, and underpowered on plug like devices and at least for my DAC-1 it does not like this.
  8. my suggestion is to use MPD and a front end like ario. in the /etc/mpd.conf ... configuration file change the output section to something like this: audio_output { type "alsa" name "HR Music StreamerII" device "hw:1,0" } This tells MPD to play the files on your second soundcard ... I'm guessing you have an internal one and the hrt is showing up as the second. If that doesn't produce output then try "hw:0,0" or "hw:2,0" also, to test from the command line for a specific wav file that you know is 24/96 or something else you can do: aplay -D hw:1,0 "name of wavefile".wav -- if you have any specific questions about MPD let me know as I have used MPD and hrt on my gentoo box for some time now without issue and bit-perfect async playback.
  9. thanks for your comments. I have to say that I also have really been tempted to get a Rega RP1 TT as I'm using a vintage technics that I like but could definitely be improved upon. The phono stage on the brio-r is truly excellent and makes this amp an even better value. If I may ask, what stands do you have the RS1's on and what height? Thanks again -Bob
  10. I just wanted to add that I recently got the rega brio-r and it is really wonderful. Upgrading speakers is out of my budget right now but I would be interested to hear opinions about the RS1 and whether or not a sub is needed / recommended.
  11. I have seen a couple posts from folks interested in linux. I would recommend this online book written by one the Gentoo developers. It may get a little thick in spots but should be at least a good foundation for those interested in nix. http://swift.siphos.be/linux_sea/
  12. I should also note this is pertinent portion of the response I got from Kevin Halverson at HRT As for your question, if you change sample rate without flushing the buffer first, a discontinuity would be of no surprise. Flushing the buffer (effectively sending a series of null value samples for a single frame (1/1000th of a second) is considered good behavior for any host. I am not a Linux user so while I have a general understanding of most of the software, I don't have the experience to point you to any setup options that would enable this behavior.
  13. I'm thinking its not a MPD issue but more likely a alsa / kernel issue as the popping sound occurs when using aplay and deadbeef. I have run mpd in debug mode and I haven't seen anything useful. I will try with -v though and report back if anything comes up. Thanks for the response. -Bob
  14. Hi everyone I have been lurking through many of the wonderful posts on this forum and through google and cannot find an answer to my unique problem. I have recently purchased a HRT Music Streamer II dac and have it hooked up to my linux box using mpd. My problem is that when I switch tracks through the client (ario or others) and the next track is a different sample rate (i.e. redbook to 92 or 88.2 or vice versa) there is a fairly loud popping sound for half a second or so. There is no crackling/pop/hiss during playback just during that first moment of the next track. I have tried virtually every possible setting in MPD and then just to make sure I wasn't totally nuts tried deadbeef and aplay directly and the same thing happens (pop!). I have verified through stream0 that the correct bit/sample rate's are being played. Just to make sure that my dac wasn't messed up I resurrected an old windows partition and installed foobar2000 with asio4all and no pop when switching. I have also tried loading snd-usb-audio wit the nrpacks=1 parameter. I have turned off usp suspend / powersave to see if that was the culprit. Both no. I also tried using plughw instead of hw and that didn't do it either. I am basically out of idea which is why I come to you (the proverbial you) desperate for some ideas. Any possible ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! -Bob
