  1. I'd say there's definitely some truth to that statement. I've experienced DAC's that were very engaging at first only to find that after extended listening they caused me headaches. Some folks refer to it as "digititus". Such experiences lead me to the purchase of my current DAC a few years ago.
  2. +1 on the NOS R2R recommendation for a smooth sound; unfortunately I don't have a specific DAC recommendation that meets your requirement for volume control and price. I personally use a Metrum Hex and have been very pleased with its performance, but here too it misses on volume control and price.
  3. Just started using the new A+ beta, 2.9.13, and I find the reliability to be total crap when using the iOS remote. Haven't tried the other beta's but this version of A+ has either crashed or just stopped playing at least a dozen times in the short time I've used this beta version. The problems all seem to be centered on interactions with the remote, i.e. usually when manually trying to change albums or playlists. The remote will lose connection then when use my iMac to screen share to my dedicated music mini where A+ resides I see the message that A+ quit unexpectedly. Speaking for myself, my priorities for A+ are as follows: 1) Reliability 2) Sound quality, this is a VERY close second to reliability but non the less still second. 3) Convenience 4) Features set I'm concerned that as A+ continues to expand it's feature set my other priorities will suffer, it seems every-time I turn around somebody is asking for some other new feature to be added to A+. I think folks should take a break from constantly asking for new features to be added to A+ and return the focus back to the basics of building the best sounding most reliable Mac music player available. Again I'm just speaking for myself here. Rant over...
  4. Upsampling to the extreme, I assume you mean kHz... ;-)
  5. IMO Support for "any" streaming service should be an optional add on to A+, not something integrated into to application itself. Streaming services can come and go, or make changes that render them incompatible with A+. Why integrate a service which is totally beyond the developers control into the application?
  6. Seemed like a valid question, why not answer? I know which I would choose.
  7. I was referring to the Regen, if your comment was specifically toward the AQJB then I misspoke.
  8. Received my Regen a couple of days ago and I've played around with it a bit, really no speedy way to do A/B testing between the Metrum's USB board vs the Audiophilleo. Offhand I think the Regen feeding the Audiophilleo has a slight edge over going straight into the Hex. The physical hardware chain isn't suitable to add my Aqvox's 5V LPS in-between the Regen and the Audiophilleo so I'm letting the Regen power the Audiophilleo. I figure the Regen's 5 volt output is likely somewhere in between the quality I would have gotten straight from my Mac Mini and the Aqvox so it should be a good compromise until Alex comes out with the upgraded Regen power supply add on. 9. Rest assured this is certainly NOT the case with the 802 Diamonds. I'm curious to hear the new 802's but have no plans on parting with my diamonds anytime soon.
  10. Based solely upon esthetics, I definitely prefer my current 802Di's over this new iteration. Be interesting to see how they actually perform compared to the versions they replace.
  11. The AP is converting the USB to SPDIF, while the Regen is working exclusively in the USB realm.
  12. I should be receiving my Regen in the next week or so. In the meantime I'd be very interested in your impressions on how well it interacts with the Hex. I also have an AP2 that I used prior to upgrading to the new USB board.
  13. I've had my Hex for some time now, several months ago I upgrade to Metrum's new USB board. I too was surprised after the USB upgrade to see the 384khz option available. So it tested it out by up-sampling some 192khz files to 384 and the unit did in fact play the 384khz content without issue. I contacted Metrum to inquire as to the 384 capability and they told my that some Hex units are indeed capable of playing 384 but they limited the listed specs to 192 because they couldn't guaranty all units would. It's a case of "under promise and over delivery" if your specific unit plays 384 consider it a bonus.
  14. I too find my NOS DAC to be more natural sounding and thus more enjoyable to listen to. Unfortunately this simple fact, i.e. listening enjoyment, seems to get derailed rather fast when bringing up the topic of NOS DAC's. It usually isn't long before someone starts giving technical reasons why you shouldn't enjoy what you're hearing ;-)
