  1. For Tidal, I'd simply go with Chromecast Audio via optical... and spend the difference on a better performing DAC. You don't need a network streamer as you don't want anything other than Tidal - so no local files, local media server, transcoding, upsampling, etc. Chromecast Audio FTW. Even does multi-room audio and works very well with external DACs.
  2. Not sure for this model. Please check, http://minimserver.com/install-synology.html.
  3. One of the best progressive/alternative metal bands, excellent music that's also foot tappingly involving i.e. PRAT for us audiophiles. Going to be a long Tool weekend (hopefully) with the goal of doing a run through of all their albums... and some whiskey for company.
  4. No, you are missing the point. Newer advancements in tech make everything so much better and also cheaper (which is a good thing for us - the consumers). A premium mobile from just 2-3 years ago is outclassed by a mid-segment smartphone of today. Case in point the Snapdragon 625 which is used is most mid-fi smartphones of these days (Xiaomi, Motorola) actually outperforms the Snapdragon 800 series from just 2 years ago. It's faster, multitasks way better, runs cooler so no thermal throttling AKA better performance, has the newer LTE chip meaning faster browsing/download speeds, etc. Anyone taking the route of premium is better than mid-fi (in this case) would be downright silly. The same goes for audiophilia too... case in point Class D is the future. There is no escaping it... nevermind all the trolling or hate it may get. Technology makes things better and also cheaper... or another way of looking at it is it keeps the innovators on their toes making them innovate rather than resting on their laurels. PS: I really see no reason why the subjective vs. objective argument needs to rear it's ugly head in here.
  5. The used marketplace can be a game changer for budding/new audiophiles. I've done it both ways, paid premium for bleeding edge technology and also bought stuff used or a couple of generations old but NIB... swings it both ways for me. Consider the iPhone 6 now... amazing deal though a couple of generations behind with the iPhone 8 around the corner. Also, in audio especially most new innovation is marketing babble... speakers and amps that are a decade or three old perform just as well. I've bought (and heard a lot more of) vintage stuff and most of the time they actually sound better... and I personally know "wise old audiophiles" who after a couple of decades neck deep in this hobby have gone the route of the old Tannoys and JBLs... and having heard them I can certainly say none of the new generation speakers compare... the only con being the space the old boys take up and not having the WAF. It's a similar story with the amps too. DACs though are (relatively) new tech since most folks over 40 probably heard music on vinyl, tape, or CD as kids.
  6. A trip down memory lane... this is some of the best rock ever... and that's saying a lot when you consider the all time greats of rock. But all said and done GNR made some great music, nevermind all the non-political correctness by today's standards. Don't Cry still gets me humming, November Rain is a guilty pleasure, especially the video, Garden Of Eden is still such a blast, and I can still rock to Axl and Slash... wow so many memories. This double album by GNR comes highly recommended, especially given that it's been over 25 years and the music is still powerful and enjoyable.
  7. One of the very finest axemen in the blues genre, this album released posthumously is a treasure and contains previously unreleased material from the SRV vault. Pretty much a must for any SRV fan, but it goes without saying Stevie Ray Vaughan is highly recommended for anyone into the blues/blues rock genre.
  8. Only audio portion of the concert, excellent quality. A must for fans of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, another side project of Wilson to check out is Blackfield.
  9. Excellent recording, Ann Wilson is in prime form. Barracuda is still a signature tune, and it has the live recording of Stairway to Heaven, making the reissue an even better deal.
  10. If you like the sound then others to check out would be Tamikrest, Terakaft, and Bombino. Eclectic sound with fusion... but all with strong blues and guitar roots.
  11. Guy is a mad rocking genius... a guitar virtuoso if there ever was one. Gotta say it again... Beck is a genius, especially when on song and that he is on this album.
  12. Blues, African style. There is also a bit of fusion thrown in as well. Some of the best world music set to the blues/blues rock guitar makes for some excellent music, even if you don't understand the lyrics. Tinariwen gets the nod, especially after the genius of Ali Farka Touré for some of the best world/fusion/African music in recent times.
  13. Classic Seger sound from the 70s. This is more of heartland rock, so not pure classic rock, but perfectly at home if you like Bruce Springsteen or the sound of Americana.
  14. FWIW, I think we'll be fine. Every generation goes through this and we feel the skies are falling and the world is coming to an end. And I'm agreement with @wgscott, I'd be happy too if my kids (when I have them, still in my 30s) were abstaining from sex, driving, etc. There is nothing wrong with staying at home you know... peer pressure is still such a huge thing to take up smoking, drinking, vandalism, sex, etc. so stay at home kids is a good thing too. I was one huge nerd, played games all day long, surfed the net, watched a ton of movies, etc. and it was all before the birth of smartphones - but you know once I got to college and then started working, socializing became the the thing. Consequently I've developed an appreciation for wine, whiskey, gourmet food, cars, etc. Life is a cycle that everybody goes through, and we all turned out fine, nevermind how much off we were as teenagers and kids. I was pretty "off"... never watched any TV, never went to church, blasted loud music all day long, played games for hours at a stretch, never did socialize much, etc.
