1. Thanks Catatrofe, thats right, I had the Encoder Settings for AIFF set to 24bit. I forgot about changing that as up to Brushfire Fairytales I never bothered to download 16bit audio but bought the CDs instead. Unfortunately Bandcamp didn't give info on the sample rate for FLAC or ALAC files.
How would I check the sample rate of a FLAC file on a Mac computer?

Cheers
Wolf-Peter
 2. Is there anything wrong with using iTunes to convert a 16/44.1 ALAC file into AIFF? Regards Wolf-Peter
 3. in my iTunes library the album shows up as being 24bit / 48kHz rather than 16bit/48kHz.
I downloaded the FLAC files, unzipped them and converted them with MAX to AIFF. After adding them to my iTunes library, if I select a track and right click to Get Info the Summary tag shows a Sample Size of 24bit.

However, the downloaded ALAC files show up as 16bit/48kHz. The actual size of the entire download is slightly larger in ALAC (330.9MB) than in FLAC (323.8MB). So I wonder what is going on here? Since the sample size is 50% bigger I reckon the compression algo in FLAC is more effective? The extracted ALAC track converted to AIFF is indeed 50% smaller than the AIFF track created from the FLAC file. I prefer the 24/48 track to the 16/48 as the latter sounds a bit coarse in comparison. Is ALAC not lossless after all? Or does Apple consider 16bit the same as 24bit, i.e. there is nothing lost in reducing the sample size from 24 to 16 bit?

The same holds true for the downloads from B+W's Society of Sound. Their ALAC files are also 16/48 and their FLAC files are 24/48. So I usually download the FLAC files and convert them with MAX to AIFF and then add them to my library. BTW, check out their Anthems compilation to celebrate 80years of Abbey Road Studios. Its in 24/96 and sounds truly awesome.

Best regards
Wolf-Peter Sandmann
