  1. Hi Folks. I have used daphile in a number of guises over the years but wanted to install it on a 2006 mac mini. I have used diskpart to clean the internal drive and can happily boot from a usb stick. I install on the cleaned harddrive using GPT and UEFI as explained in the manual. It says its installed, I restart and now the mac mini retsarts but no bong and nothing else, the fan is going but nothing else occurs. As its in this state I cannot for instance use ALT to choose a boot volume as there is no display or anything. Is there anything else to be done or should I give up?
  2. Hello. I have just got my intel nuc up and running and stuck on Daphile, a couple of observations: This software is super simple to install, top job! It literally took five minutes from downloading the iso, putting to usb stick and installing on the intel, I was delighted as usually me an linux involves hours of frustration usually going late into the night. The interface is nice The basic set up interface is nice and clean, love it. General use is very nice I guess based on squeeze, but this is lovely to use. I was chuffed that when I plugged in my mac formatted drive it was recognised, top job. Music is populating now, and I have some tunes playing. Audio output is very good. I am perhaps an animal but I don't really hear a terrific amount of difference between devices, but perhaps owning the latest gen of mac minis I am spoilt, I don't know. But any how daphile on an intel nuc into a musicfidelity SPDIF convertor into my supernait is very good. If you like the naim sound that helps but the server is not adding to much sibilance which I felt I was getting on the mac. The squeezplayer app is very nippy I like it a lot. My only concern is didn;t logitech ditch this lot, whats to stop them pulling the plug on the whole shebang? wishlist My desires are simple. On the video output would it be possible to just see whats playing now, I like to see it on the TV. Tagging. UNless I am missing something there is no way to adjust incorrect tags. Or is there anyway to run say BLISS in the background? All in though chuffed, great piece of software, well played.
  3. Still waiting patiently for a stick of ram to go into a NUC I have purchased. The plan being a dedicated music server. That is what I would like, something thats sole purpose is the delivery of music to my hifi. I understand that Daphile and Vortexbox run on linux and appear to offer this solution. However is there other options? Anything else out there to consider? I would prefer not to be installing windows as in my experience it demands to much of my time. In a truly ideal world there would be a gorgeous interface on both my ipad but also on a connected screen that could be controlled with a remote. To an extent Plex does this, but its hardly optimised for audio. I also like XBMC but again last time I used it it was no good for hi def of which I have a little bit. Also the pair of these were a nightmare for setting up playlists. A primary concern is to be able to set up play now/last type playlists. I love this feature in 'remote' for itunes. Does daphile/vortexbox offer this. Any hints and tips would be great I am working through this board slowly. I noted another 3 letter acronyms for delivery of music and looked at the wiki, but seemed one for programmers.
  4. I have installed OpenMediaVault, VortexBox etc before so am reasonably comfortable. Can't wait to have a go but am waiting on ram for the little NUC, had loads of it in a drawer, none of it right! Looks like a great forum, if you guys have some links for noobs to Daphile stuff, especially for controlling it that would be great, the main website for it seems a bit spartan!
  5. Thanks guys, I look forward to having a play. One other question, I don't have an external dvd device for instal, can it be installed via USB if i use netbootin or something? Otherwise I could stick the drive in an old PC I have and install it then transfer to the NUC, if that will work?
  6. Hello the daphile server looks interesting, but only mentions usbs dacs, which I dont have I do have a usb to spdif convertor (music fidelity) to go to my dac, will this work? I was going to put the server on an intel nuc with usb harddrive for the music.
  7. Um, a screen simply for the purpose of checking itunes, a keyboard and mouse and even a spare 500gig drive is going to set you back about 600 quid. A macbook is £1k Not very close, especially as you will need a big drive and back up solution for the macbook anyhow. Don;t stop you wanting one though
  8. A common issue is how people choose to stream. For instance if you have sharing set up on itunes with your computers and are sat in front of the hifi with your lappy but the music is on another computer the following occurs: You pick a tune from your shared library, the server library dishes the tune to the router then to your lappy then from your lappy back to the router then to the express. This frequently causes drop outs. You might try VNCing the other computer and picking music directly in this way the server itunes only fires via the router to the express ignoring your lappy. Or you could use an ipod touch connected directly with the server library with itunes set to deliver music to the express. In either of these configs you half the amount of toe and froing with itunes.
