  1. I've had the Weiss DAC204 for a few months now and have had their DAC501 (retail $11k) in my main stereo for several years. With the stock supply, the 204 is very close to the 501. With the linked power supply, I can't hear a difference. I need an iFi Zen Stream to connect the 204 to my network (wired, not wifi). The 501 allows direct connection to the network. Steve Huff, in his DAC204 review (linked), prefers the 204 with the stock supply to the widely praised T+A DAC200 (retail $7125). All these linear power supplies have an internal trim pot that lets you adjust the output voltage anywhere in the specifier range. BTW, many of the domestically sold linear power supplies selling for 2 to 6 times more, are the same supplies, sometimes in fancy casework, sometimes not or even of lesser quality. I know of one US vendor selling the exact same $30 Chinese supply under their name for $165. Linear Power Supply Weiss DAC204 Review
  2. Perhaps, this long thread may answer some of your questions. SwissDigital Fuse Box Thread
  3. Might be that you're speaking mostly with gear heads. No mystique among that broad client list I posted. Certainly no mystique in the pro audio community. The hearsay I've heard are from folks that have never heard a pair. I heard Kii speakers twice and was not impressed. Another one I've not heard but have read good things about are the Dutch & Dutch 8C actives.
  4. ATC active is probably the best known and regarded in both pro and consumer applications. Perhaps an active Legacy Audio system. ATC Client List
  5. Actives are no heavier than many passive speakers. Regarding servicing, at least with ATC, the "amp packs" are easily removed and would ship to the service center much the same way an amp would. I think US gear heads disparage active speakers mostly because it gives them two less things (amps and speaker cables) to dick with. Most of that group have also not heard a well designed, properly set up active speaker system. Just a lot of speculation.
  6. View Classified Zesto Audio Bia 200 Select Class A Stereo 100W Vacuum Tube Power Amplifier - Like New Original owner. Low hours. Like new condition. Free shipping. Priced way below wholesale. Retail $15,900. Yours for $7495. 100W/channel. Three selector bias switch allows for KT88, KT120, KT150 or KT170 operation. Supplied with KT150 output tubes. Purchased new February 2022. Sent back to factory November 2022 for latest factory updates and new 12AU7 tubes. This unit represents the current production model. Many recent rave reviews. The best sounding amplifier I've ever had in house. "With the supplied KT150s the performance was magical. The 100 watts per channel yielded dynamic power and slam which sounded more like 200 watts. The presentation was organic and elegant, similar to amplifiers triple the cost. As superb as the highs and mids were conveyed, the bass was world-class and competitive with solid state. The Bia 200 Select is the stereo tube amp to own if you are in the market at any price. I heartily give the Reviewers Choice Award to the Zesto Audio Bia 200 Select Stereo Tube Amplifier. “Most highly recommended by me, regardless of your predilection for tubes or solid-state.” By Robert H. 8. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Coda. Those that have compared generally prefer the lower cost Coda to Pass. The folks at Coda worked with Nelson Pass during the Threshold days. Their Continuum No 8 in v1 mode is class A up to 18W and then switches to class AB up to 150W. Meter-less versions occasionally show up used at the top of your budget.
  9. BTW, you should also look into Kii speakers; another brand with everything including DAC and DSP inside the box. There looks to be an informative thread just a bit below this one.
  10. I and several friends run a Weiss DAC501 (remote control volume) directly into our active ATC speakers (SCM50ASLT or SCM100ASLT). That's just about as clean and simple as a speaker with built in DAC. I very much doubt the DAC built into any speaker would outperform the Weiss. The many useful DSP features put it over the top. I think, like most folks that own and love ATC active, that you should stick with a smaller ATC active. With that said, I have heard nothing but good things about the D&D but I have not heard them myself. I think in your case, an audition would be a must. The rest of us can only envy you for having EL 150s in your home for all those years. I would think anything else, including smaller ATC active, would be a disappointment. Unless your 150s had previous revision midrange and tweeters. Then you might get a nice surprise with even a lesser current ATC active model. These latest drivers are supposed to be a fairly significant improvement over the previous generation. I use ATC active in both my home and studio so I'm just a little biased about this brand. Best of luck. I hope you find the perfect solution for your new home.
  11. I have two friends with Legacy speakers. One drives his new Focus SE speakers in a large room with a Rega Elicit-R integrated amp. The other drives his Studio HD speakers in a smaller room with a Rega Elex-R integrated amp. Both are very satisfied. I have a pair of Classic HD speakers that sound great with a Black Ice Audio F22 integrated amplifier.
  12. I own a number of Manley components and couldn't imagine better value for my money even with the recent price increases. I've had a minor service request; the response was immediate and their service impeccable. Rather than purchasing the flavor of the month (many of these companies will be history in ten years), buy from a US company with a stellar track record and staying power. Manley is one of the iconic US brands. BTW, their pro gear is in the best studios in the world.

  14. You're correct, these supplies run extremely, dangerously hot especially with the opticalRendu. I get the same answer from SMG, it's normal, it's okay. I can't touch mine for more than two seconds. This kind of heat will absolutely cause a rapid deterioration of internal components, especially the electrolytic capacitors. Their 15W supplies also can run extremely hot. Burning to the touch when used with a Chord Qutest.
