  1. Dear All, Well, I've been experimenting with different software of the last few days, and I really can hear the difference, especially with Amarra Junior. It's not immediately obvious when doing an A/B comparison between iTunes and Amarra, but over time the sound from Amarra is, somehow, more natural and less fatiguing. I just wish I understood what was going on here! Could Amarra be adding a sort of benign distortion? The only downside seems to be that gapless albums don't play as they should in Amarra. Is there anything that can be done about this? Thanks in advance for your further advice and comments. Best Wishes, Wilts_RM
  2. Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have had a search through the forums, and whilst I can find lots of discussion around which software sounds better, I can't find an explanation of why one bit perfect software should sound radically different to another, but point me in the right direction if I've missed something. It was my reading of those discussions that prompted me to ask. It seems like there's a lot more to computer audio than I first realised! Thanks again, Best Wishes, Wilts_RM
  3. Hi, Thanks for taking the time to respond, and thanks for the explanation. I was always under the impression that CD transports sounded different because of the inherent problems of reading data from a CD in real time, and the effects of the various error correction techniques used to compensate. So, do different CD transports actually deliver the same data? Or do better CD transports give a more accurate version of the data? Wasn't bit perfect output from a computer supposed to overcome those disc related issues, and deliver consistent, error-free data? I don't doubt that I've got this all wrong somewhere along the line. I just want to have some sort of understanding as to the mechanisms at work here so that I can make a sound judgement as to the best software to use. Thanks again. Best Wishes, Wilts_RM
  4. Mac Software & Bit Perfect Playback Dear All, I am relatively new to the world of computer-based audio, or at least to considering it as part of my 'real' stereo system. I am really confused by the myriad software players that are available for Mac OS X which all promise to sound better than iTunes, and I'm hoping that someone will be able to advise me. I thought that when the equaliser wasn't switched off, and the volume control set to the maximum, that iTunes delivered a bit perfect signal. Am I just wrong about this? Moreover, if all of the different players are supposed to be bit perfect, how can is it possible for them to sound different? Won't the DAC just be receiving identical data from each of the players? As I say, this is all a bit new to, but I want to make sure that I get the basics right at this stage, including playback. I have tried a demo of Fidelia, and I think I can hear some differences compared to iTunes, but I really can't understand why! For reference, I'm using XLD to rip my CDs to Apple Lossless. I've downloaded a few high resolution tracks, and converted these to Apple Lossless using Max to play in iTunes. It is a pain to have to change the Audio MIDI settings when playing high resolution material, but I can live with it. Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to offer. Best Wishes, Wilts_RM
