  1. Anyone with an opinion on choosing any of the 4 bit rate options? Is it best to choose the sample rate of the source you're ripping? Can benefits be had if a higher bit rate is chosen?
  2. In XLD one is given the options of 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit if the Output Format of AIFF is chosen (see screenshot attachment). If choosing a bit rate higher than the standard CD bit rate of 16 (if one is ripping a standard CD) is there any benefit to this?
  3. Thanks Doug, I appreciate any opinions & in particular opinions on NAS devices as pertaining to streaming audio/media to help narrow my focus. I too plan on using a NAS with Squeezecenter on it. One thing I'm trying to determine is what kind of performance do I need in a NAS product? I have over 2 TB of audio files & about that much in video. This storage need will probably double in the next year (so I like the ReadyNAS's ability to upgrade "on-the-fly"). Reading various reviews here & there on different NAS's I see performance complaints now & then. One review on the ReadyNAS NV+ said it's media streaming performance becomes sluggish on large libraries. I wonder if this is true or not? What kind of demands is the reviewer placing on their NAS? Are they doing something more than streaming? Are they streaming different media at the same time to different users (how many users, etc.?)? At the time of the review did they have something not set properly (maybe something not updated)? Any opinions on what these performance issues might be?
  4. Doug, I need to do a bit more research on the ReadyNAS NV+ & NAS's in general. My understanding on the NV+ is that it is fan less & that a fan is an option. Is this correct? In your opinion, how is the noise level? Have you ever had to deal with customer support for the NV+? If so, how would you rate them?
  5. RHA when you format (initially set it up) your new Drobo set it at 16 TB so you are future proofed for future expansion (this also will show up as 1 big drive). After you format the new Drobo then do a clone of you USB Drobo to the FW Drobo using something like SuperDuper. I'd keep the USB Drobo so you can use it to back up your main Drobo.
  6. Mike (mike11) & Doug (baumer) - Did you guys decide on a NAS (or updated NAS in Doug's situation) solution yet? If so, what had been your opinions on your choices?
  7. Is the USB asynchronous or adaptive? Is this an upsampling DAC or does it play natively? Does the USB support 24 bit, too, or is it limited to 16 bit depth rate?
  8. bixby, thanks for the input. I've attached a screenshot of the Advanced settings from iTunes Preferences & this is how I've had things set up since moving music folders to the FW Drobo a couple of years ago. Are you saying that I should uncheck the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"? or is there another place in Preferences to "uncheck the option in itunes to have everything mirrored in the media folder"?
  9. Thanks jtwrace. I'm going to wait to see if there are any more opinions before I attempt to do this (& do a bit more research). There is over 1 TB of music on the Drobo & I like to "measure twice & cut only once" to use a common carpentry metaphor. I do not have a clear clue as to where my artwork is. I have artwork on my songs, because this shows up when playing iTunes. But, I don't seem to have a single folder that holds this artwork. As you can see by the screenshot I attached to the original post in my iTunes folder (which is on the iBook G4 disk) there is a folder labeled Artwork (Get Info says this folder has 3.5 GB on it), yet it hasn't been modified since Sept. 2008 & I have been importing CDs, etc. weekly. There is a Cache folder (Get Info says there is 2.76 GB on it) in the Artwork folder which last was modified in March 2010. I do not have any folders labeled Artwork on the Drobo. Anyone have a clue where my artwork is being stored?
  10. I am trying to understand my iTunes set-up better. Anyone who can help in enlightening my understanding I would greatly appreciate it. When I launch Finder a window appears with the following options to choose from: Devices, Places & Search For. When I choose Places I am given a number of choices, in which one of them is Music. Choosing Music gives me my iTunes Folder, which appears to the right of the Places column. I have attached a screenshot of my iTunes Folder with a list of items that are in it or not. I have a FW Drobo attached to my iBook in which my iTunes music folder resides. You can see by the attached screenshot that there is a folder titled iTunes Music in the iTunes folder (which resides on my iBook), but the iTunes Music folder on the iBook is empty. Would it be better to have the iTunes folder (which holds the iTunes Library) placed in the Drobo along with the music folder that are already in the Drobo?
  11. I wonder if (or when) 96kHz/24-bit versions will ever be released? According to a cnet.com review, "the 96/kHz-24-bit resolution digital masters were made from the original analog master tapes". http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-20018581-47.html
  12. A Amazon.com reviewer states that the downloadable files are 320 kbps/44.1 khz. They also state that 320 is good enough for mono. What do folks think of this statement? Wouldn't one have better sonic results by ripping there hard copy cds with no loss (e.g. AIFF, etc.)?
  13. Anyone own the Bob Dylan Mono Recordings Box Set with included downloadable MP3 files? What is the resolution of these downloadable files (e.g. 96kHz/24 Bit; other?)?
  14. Does anyone know what the MP3 download resolution are that is included with "Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings" box set?
  15. mwheelerk, You can convert WAV files in MAX just like converting FLAC files (just drag & drop or click on the + sign & select where the file).
