  1. Chris, I was there this weekend. Had a great time but I'm exhausted. I'm disappointed I didn't get to meet you while there. I was with my business associate running around like crazy trying to meet all the folks behind the gear we will be carrying as well as listening to see what else we will use. We are starting a business in Nashville, TN. Instead going with a storefront we will be using a residential home and converting it. Did you get to hear the Laufer room with the new Leonardo ribbon speakers?
  2. Dan Lavry has been a big name in the pro audio world for awhile and I respect his knowledge and what he's accomplished. He builds good converters too. The only problem I have is that he's treated like a "god" in that world and whatever he says goes. I believe PeterSt and Steve Nugent of Empirical Audio have both argued with Dan on pro audio forums about D/A conversion in general and absolutely everyone mocked both Peter and Steve although the posters clearly knew little about DAC design in general. Unfortunately for Dan there are many converters out now which I and many others think sound better than even his Gold series line. Sorry Dan. Discussing theory and what's on paper only goes so far. The proof is in the pudding.
  3. I caught one of their live streaming shows the other night and saw the 1970's southern rock band The Outlaws playing. The HD streaming quality was good and it sounded great. I'll be tuning in more often now. I certainly enjoy what they are doing.
  4. The i7 gets my vote. The difference in heat is going to be minimal between the i5 and i7 they are both efficient processors. Max out the RAM on your mini as well if you can.
  5. I was enjoying my shiny new Apogee Rosetta 200 DAC when a week after receiving it the power went out and the DAC powered off sending a seriously loud thump through my active monitors & blowing both tweeters and causing amplifier issues in one of them that will cost me the price of the speaker to get repaired. I'm looking for a pre-amp needless to say...it's simply playing russian roulette without a volume control in the chain. That's my advice.
  6. I've just now in the last 15 minutes seen several reports of Steve Jobs' battle with cancer come to an end today. If this is true this is very saddening. A pioneer ending their journey...
  7. What kind of sound are you after? I have heard quite a few active monitors. I'd take a look at the Event Opal monitors (they don't need a sub, very solid bass). Take a look at Genelec 3-ways, ADAM 3-ways, Dynaudio 3 ways, and the Focal Twin Be 6 line. The Barefoot monitors are also a very good suggestion. But most importantly what kind of sound are you after? Each of these line of monitors have different flavors.
  8. My dealer usually gives me from 15% to 20% off of the retail price depending on what it is. Yeah I highly recommend getting from an authorized dealer. It's a nightmare doing it the other way from experience...
  9. Anyone have issues with Play Through mode? I get jarbled audio with varying amounts of "pops" in the audio after about 2 or 3 mins of playback through 2 different browsers streaming audio online and the same thing occurs with playback via Itunes radio. Tried various buffer settings in my audio interfaces preferences to no avail. Tried different settings in Pure Music with many different variables and no luck.
  10. I downloaded it recently but no luck. I've used the free version of Audirvana with my headphones through my audio interface. For 2-channel listening via monitors I run digital interface to DAC direct to amps so I need volume control via software. Unfortunately my audio device doesn't show up in the Audio System tab in Audirvana Plus. Sent Damien an e-mail; was really looking forward to this, bummer.
  11. The only stupid or funny thing I see is oddly enough hurting the digital feelings of 3 people who clearly need to spend less time on the computer. Have a good one.
  12. It wouldn't be true if we were talking about having enough juice to simply run Firefox
  13. Power supply. First and foremost. That stock supply doesn't have the juice.
  14. What kind of system are you running D Tilley? Have you tried straight USB into the Grace? From the looks of it your USB ports aren't sharing with any other devices. They should perform equally from the snapshot alone but that's the fun with computer audio. Much more than meets the eye, many many variables involved.
  15. The same thing happened with the increased memory advantage when Windows 7 came out. It actually wouldn't install generally on machines with 2GB of DDR2. There was a new 4GB requirement. Mercman, from what you say Lion enjoys the RAM air horsepower under your hood. Perhaps they are finally taking advantage of multiple cores & larger amounts of memory. Yee haw.
