Hi,
After spending days/weeks analyzing the different NAS units, I settled for a HTPC or Mini Server because it satisfied best my requirements:
- RAID-6 or better
- Silent
- Energy efficient
- Digital 24bit 96kHz output
- Spacious (I have 500+ GB of music)
- Cheap
My Setup:
Mainboard: mini-ITX + AMD E-350 (CPU+GPU) - ASUS E35M1-I DELUXE

Case: Lian Li - PC-Q08 (fits 6 hard disks, using 4)

Software:
Ubuntu 11.10
ZFS on Linux (RAIDZ2 is even better than RAID-6 IMHO)
MPD
You mentioned reliable, which triggered my reply: ZFS was developed to prevent bitrot and with RAIDZ-2 it is the best solution out there. ZFS on Linux is still very new (http://zfsonlinux.org/) but it is based on the solid Solaris implementation.
NOTE: From the comment above, you probably already gathered that if fiddling with computers is not your cup of tea, than I'd suggest to go for a NAS instead. As I do not own any, I won't advice on that.
Cheers, Jeroen
