  1. Many thanks. I had read the detailed post by the host on using both a Windows and Mac to rip and end up with three copies of each file, but it would require more computing hardware that I am ready to commit to at this time. I will keep you posted on my progress and am sure to come up with more questions. (I realize that my question was similar to a recent one, but the difference was that I had bought Amarra and wanted to make sure I was going to be able to work with it.)
  2. Thanks to all who responded to my first post on "Mac Mini--the very first steps." It helped a great deal. Anyway I have gotten everything set up I think (installed Amarra on the MacMini, connected the HDD, etc....)and am about to rip the first CDs as AIFF on to an external HDD (MiniPro 1TB FireWire 800, Mac Version). A few questions: (1) The Audio MIDI Setup, all I did was to select the SPDIF Bridge as the "Use this device for sound output." Do I leave format at 96000.0 Hz? Is there anything else I need to do in the Audio MIDI Setup? (2) In iTunes Preferences, I set "Import CD and Eject," unchecked the software updates from being automatic, changed iTunes Media folder location to my HDD "/volumes/MiniPro" but not sure in Advanced if I should have checked or unchecked "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library"? (3) Also not sure if I should check or uncheck "Use error correction" in the import settings? (4) Also not sure once I set the Import at AIFF Encoder if I leaving the Settings at Automatic or set the Sample Rate and Sample Size under Custom? (5) Anything else--basic or not--that I am missing before I start to rip my CDs? Thanks again.
  3. Thanks. I won't be able to locate the HD away from the Mac mini, so I looked around on the website and ended up reading the reviews at Newegg as some recommended. Looks like the Western Digital ITB USB external HD (WDBAAU0010HBK-NESN) was one of the highest rated quiet HDs. But apologies for being a bit confused. I have an S/PDIF Bridge by Halide Design for Mac mini to DAC, so if I am reading you rightly I need a Firewire-capable HD and not the one I found.
  4. I have just bought a Naim DAC, Amarra and am in the process of buying a Mac Mini. I've read quite a few reviews in these forums, but apologize in advance if everything I am asking has already been answered. My (two-part) question is what would you recommend for the Mac Mini configuration? I was going to order the Mac Mini with Lion Server with 8GB RAM and 2x750GB Serial ATA Drives, but seems that some of you would avoid the Server configuration because two drives means risk of sound degradation and difficulties in having iTunes work with two drives. So I ruled out the Server configuration, but now my questions are: (a) 2.5GHz vs 2.7GHz--is this simple always get the faster processor? I've already read enough to learn to go for 8GB in RAM. (b) 256GB SSD and then buy external hard drive or some other combination? Not sure I understand, but Amarra webpage recommends SSD drive for the Operating System. What are the best recommendations for the external hard drive? Notice--I've not asked about Lion vs Snow Leopard since I have no real choice as I am just now buying the Mac Mini. I also have more questions, but as recommended in the FAQs, better to start slow. Thanks again for any feedback.
