  1. Taking into account that the actual levels are different (XLR is hotter) has anyone noticed a sound quality difference between the balanced outs (XLR) and unbalanced out (rca)? I have them hooked up directly to a pair of Dynaudio BM5a and can say that the XLR output is superior to the RCA on the DLIII. The most noticeable difference is the bass is deeper and punchier with the XLR. Anyone else experience this? Best
  2. "Do your Dynaudios have level controls"...yes +4, 0, -10dB setting on the back. I set them to 0. The creek passive pre has been great, Im thinking about going for the Placette Passive Pre and see if that steps it up a notch in fidelity..
  3. I've been trying to figure out the best way for volume control using a PS Audio DL III connected to some powered Dynaudio BM5A speakers. I first tried using an active pre. I tried a tube Quicksilver Line Stage, and then a NAD solid State pre. Both ended up "mucking" up the signal in a why that was detrimental (IMO). Next choice was using the digital volume control within iTunes but knew I was chopping bit length, but so far the best results have been with a remote control Creek passive pre between the DAC and Dynaudio (itunes at full volume). Works great and to my ears does not affect the signal at all. I also control my phono pre through the second channel on the passive pre. The DC resistance on the Dynaudio were 100K so I believe more than 10x the output resistance (impedance) of the PS Audio and Phono Pre. A simple and cost effective approach to controlling volume in my case. Just some food for thought. Best Regards Theron Baltimore
  4. that's definately another consideration. Has anyone compared the two fidelity wise?
  5. ...my thought now is to get a Wyred4sound DAC 2 and use the HT Bypass to pass analog signals through to the powered Dynaudio monitors (via XLR). The volume control for the analog signals would be a passive pre (staged before the DAC2). The volume control for digital signals would be the DAC2 digital volume. Does this make sense? Anyone do this? Kind Regards Theron
  6. ...and I found that the mini-toslink to DLIII sounded better than the USB connection when playing Apple Lossless files through iTunes.... IMO the USB connection sounded lifeless and very 2-D. The Toslink was noticeably better.... very open and natural sounding through the DLIII.
  7. jack of all trades, master of none...
  8. I'm maybe thinking a Wyred4Sound DAC2 and then get an external ADC (line in analog to USB)? Any suggestions appreciated... thanks Theron Baltimore
  9. This is my first post and I've been searching with no luck (I apologize if I've missed anything) but I am looking to purchase a DAC with remote volume control and an analog input (ADC i.e. from my phono pre) for my Technics 1200 turntable? (around $1500-$2500 budget) I currently have a PS Audio DL III connected directly into powered monitors (Dynaudio Bm5a) with excellent results (no pre). Now I want to upgrade the DAC with these features. Any suggestions appreciated....Antelope? Wyred4sound? Bel Canto? Kind Regards Theron
