    Ayre USB query

I'm getting an Ayre QB9 in for evaluation this week and wanted to be sure that I get the correct USB. Currently I am using the USB that is shared with the Bluetooth controller. Bluetooth is turned off in system preferences. Am I correct in assuming that the only device using it in reality is the dac or do I need to try the other USB ports on the Mac Mini to try and get the dac isolated? I swear that before I went to Mountain Lion only the DAC was on the USB port.

On the Mac Mini (late 2012 with 4 USB 3.0 ports) the best isolated USB port is number [3]. If you see the Mini from the rear and count the ports from right to left. I use this port to the DAC even if I use Bluetooth keyboard & mouse.

Scroll down about 3/4 of the page to:

That page was what got me thinking something had changed. I am using the port that is the second from the right. I fooled around and found that something was paired with the dac on each of the ports. I have a choice of IR controller or Bluetooth controller. I've turned both off. So am I OK or will I need to do something else to use the Ayre? Also, is one preferable to the other?

BTW Beetlemania, your comparison of the qb9 with the updated dsd version was very helpful. If I like the old version I will order the dsd version.

It depends on Mac Mini year model. 'Best' port per year:

Number [2] on the Mac Mini 2010

Number [4] on the Mac Mini 2011

Number [3] on the Mac Mini 2012

Mines a 2012 so I will plug her in to # 3 and cross my fingers.

I swear that when I was running Lion there was nothing paired with the dac!

    Are you still on Lion?

Just curious since Mountain Lion is the preferred one!

I'm on mountain lion, but regardless of the port, something else is listed.

So I got the Ayre in and found that I couldn't get it to do 192. Tried changing USB ports and the third from the right worked. But, when I reconnected my other DAC, my mini wouldn't even recognize it on that port. Tried rebooting etc. Changed back to second from the right and voila! Weird. Anybody know why that might happen?

Two DACs in the same Mac Mini at the same time?

I don't fully understand what you mean - and I have minimal experience with Macs.

There are a few steps to get 24/192 from the QB-9, including throwing the switch on the back (apparently, the DSD version automagically figures out that step). See the Ayre computer set-up page for all the details.

No. First the Ayre, then I put in my DAciT.

Beetle, I got it to work, just curious about why only one port worked for 192. Seemed strange.
