Chris great site - congratulations !!!

This is just what I've been looking for.

You are coming in on the ground floor of what I believe to be the next great audiophile frontier.

IMHO you should team up with Empirical Audio who I believe to be on the cutting edge of computer audio.

Keep up the good work and thanks for a great site.

Dave

p.s This needs to be in a general topic forum.

Some say that a computer will never match a good CD player. Others say bits is bits that don't care how they're read. I agree with the latter and have moved my library to the computer. Sound quality is excellent and convenience is great. Playlists are a marvellous invention for those records that are just too much by themselves, but whose songs are great when added as spice to the playlist stew. For me, this argument is long since over.

The missing piece is distribution. Why buy CDs? Well, they don't have DRM, for one thing... I don't download because the quality isn't there. If someone starts distributing Apple Lossless files I might get interested.

The other looming problem is mastering. Now that the Ipod is ubiquitous it drives music sales. Mastering engineers know that they're competing with traffic noise and everything else on a set of earbuds, so they cut the album hot. I don't know what the answer will turn out to be here, but perhaps there'll be an audiophile revolution. Storm the mastering house! Take back music for those who care!

I'm with you 100% on that. I'll never buy another CD player again. Computer based sound will only get better and better.

Distribution is terrible today, no doubt about it. Hopefully Linn Records will be a leader that everyone will follow. What they offer is absolutely perfect. Studio Master 24/96 FLAC files all the way down to MP3s for those who want them.

I hadn't thought of the mastering issue before but you are right. Music mastered for the iPod and its environment is scarier than compressed CDs.

Thanks for your opinion LC.

Because of the computer's influence on multimedia, small form factor media players like the iPod have the ability to play back absolutely gorgeous sound and video. These players have made quality more portable. There, as in fine home systems, we have the ability to choose to purchase (or create) and place that kind of audio and video on these players, not just any ca-ca that is 'shoveled out' to us. The tendency, as it has always been in the 'Hi Fi' world, is for the big commercial players in the media business to cut the corners available to BE cut in order to maximize their profits. Also, much of the music today is mastered hot because, well it IS hot - not ALWAYS a bad thing..... We as always, have the 'voting lever' in our wallet$$, ... ahem.....

Don't buy crap: Whenever possible, avoid purchasing anything you cannot convert (this is why the computer is the answer) to run on your portable at the bit rate YOU want to run there. Don't fall into the trap, keep purchasing and listening to the good stuff, but now take it with you too!
