Also, the basic RTP protocol is in RFC 3550, and I am pretty sure retransmission is in there when they start talking about translators. I'm on my phone right now or I would check that, but it is somewhere around section 7. RFC 3551- RTP with minimal control does not support retrains so far as I know, but it might.
I checked through these. Streaming H.264 codecs are certainly packet loss tolerant and we tested that too with varying amount of packet loss so that you get only minimal visual distortions in the image. I think we implemented 6184 too. AFAIK, RTP is only reliable when used over TCP (it doesn't mandate UDP, although that's most typical).

RFC 6184 doesn't define any retransmission mechanism, it only says that such can be used if wanted and specifies certain conditions that should be met in that case. In addition it goes on to say "The most efficient means to combat packet losses for scenarios where retransmissions are not applicable is forward error correction (FEC)." And goes on to link to RFC 5109 that specifies FEC payload.

RFC 3551 only defines that packet loss should be monitored that it stays within acceptable bounds and "This condition can be satisfied by implementing congestion control mechanisms to adapt the transmission rate (or the number of layers subscribed for a layered multicast session), or by arranging for a receiver to leave the session if the loss rate is unacceptably high.".

RFC 3550 section 7 only talks about media transcoding and mixing and the retransmission of participant description packets of multi-party session in case of RTCP stream changes. Chapter 6.4.4 talks about packet loss analysis and reporting so that sender and network can adjust accordingly (like lowering audio or video bitrate or switching to lower sampling rate or different codec).

The point is, it is misleading to say using UDP vice TCP precludes error checking, reordering, or retransmitting the packets delivered. Those functions are simply moved into a higher level protocol like RTP (RTCP), etc.
Reordering is done in RTP jitter buffer where you hold certain number of received packets in sequence number order and at last moment decide if one sequence number has been lost in transit.

Regarding QoS, it is equally applicable to both UDP and TCP since it is implemented at IP level (DSCP).

Lightning has been developed for a whole and this is the first time been disclosed. It will offer the great sound quality and best using experience.
Kudos for Auralic to embark in the software adventure, which is tricky, full of obstacles, bugs, and of course, the fact that one can never please all different consumers...

Me, I have tested many many control points...
My main request would be to Auralic to make good use if all the richness found in metadata. Many people like to enrich files beyond the bread & butter simple classification of Artist/Album or Genre/Artist/Album.

Minimserver as done this brilliantly on it's "intelligent browsing" and would be nice if Auralic can support it!
Next releases will bring even more refinement to this great server...

For example, recently Lumin adopted support to Minimserver navigation.
Go one gets instant access to all additional tags while keeping other "native" function from lumin like context query...It was a smart and brilliant move from Lumin and instantly improve my satisfaction with the software, especially for classical music...

Another point I see interesting would be if Auralic could be flexible and let user choose how to process files (upsample or not, for example)...

Finally, I have been testing with REW in my room, and I validated what I already knew from ear....room correction is great and clearly improves acoustics at frequency and impulse response.

So I will follow your take on room correction very closely.
The fact that this will become available at the source I think is perfect, from a system point of view...so that the ones with "classic" gear do not have to change their preamp or amp stages, or have a laptop always on...to have this great convenience...

PS - my favorite control points: Lumin (running minimserver), Aurender app and Soolos app; Jremote

^ Mike and Ted your comments are both spot on!!!!

I don't see a problem on the MinimServer side... it's been said this new lightning product uses uPnP out of the box right?

But now we find its Linux based.. well as you say Ted, it's going to be very much dependant when/ if??? The DAC manufacturers do USB Linux drivers.

I'd also like the addition of multichannel as soon as possible.

But Mr Wang... You are going to need that DAC Linux driver support to happen very early on !!!

Anyway. I am extremely interested in this product. I guess I fall right smack in the middle of its target market. I'll be buying one 4 sure. I won't be able to help myself. (If anyone needs a beta tester please let me know!!!!) If it then shows potential and what Ive now found out from Mr Wang.... might even buy a couple and do multiroom hirez properly for a change.

Exciting times ahead. Could we be witnessing the early birth of 2014 CA product of the year ? Lets hope so... So many products in this space become vapourware. Please. May it not be his one.

Wups - my bad. I glanced at that and thought it to be iTunes. That's really pretty nice!

What does it look like on an iPhone? Any idea? This is getting more interesting now...

Any update from the Auralic CES stand on the no. of compatible USB DSD DAC's that will need a Linux driver issue? I have 2 I'd like to try with this great new device. A Resonessence Invicta. And an Exasound e28.. I'd also like to run it into my Original Benchmark for good ol PCM....

Since the Auralic DAC is USB Class 2 audio compliant, I suspect the Aries USB output would be the same. It is common to make linux based systems compatible with the USB Class 2 Audio standard, so any DACs which work without drivers on OSX (Class 2 Audio) should work fine with the Aries without the need for additional drivers.
Drivers for DACs which are not compatible with the USB Class 2 Audio standard are really the problem of the DAC manufacturer, it will be up to them to provide drivers.

For Linux it is largely one-time effort. Like M2Tech hiFace drivers (+ OEM id's) are now part of the Linux kernel. No need to ship or provide separate drivers anymore. Such won't happen easily for proprietary OS like OS X easily though...

It is like most other drivers too, like ethernet adapter or SATA controller drivers and such.
