George Harrison - Early Takes Vol 1 HD Tracks hi-res

Couldn't resist. Downloaded this yesterday. It's 10 songs, about half demo versions of well known Harrison songs, about half early workups with a basic rock band in the studio - no overdubs.

If you like George, this is very enjoyable. You hear him in a basic setting, no Phil Spector "wall of sound" - playing guitar and singing. Intimate and moving, even though some tracks are clearly rehearsal. Shows off a lot of George's often under-appreciated talents.

As far as the sound: It's fine. Nothing special. I doubt there was much reason to do this in hi-res, as we are basically talking about demo tapes George did in his home studio (which was top notch, by the way). I got the download b/c it was convenient and I had a discount code (full price is $17.98 -yikes). It's only $10 on Amazon for the same music on Redbook CD, so it's probably worth it to just buy the CD. My guess is that the CD sounds just as good.

firedog, thank you for the review. I was tempted. Having ordered the super, deluxe, wows-zowie set which includes the CD, I opted not to duplicate the volume 1. Struggling to understand the reason for $18 offer (less discount of 15%). Feeling gouged again as I did when Studios charge so much for redbook CDs. But this not your message to us. I have just about all George Harrison's work. His wife's book is also on my table. So well done.
Thank you again for the post and graph(s).

Thanks for posting, Firedog. Am interested in this one. If it sounds as good as the hi-res of "All Things Must Pass" I'll be very happy.

Some of the extras on the DVD sound pretty cool. I'd like to see and hear the part with "Here Comes the Sun" where they take out the tapes in the studio and play alternate George guitar solos.

firedog, the deluxe set from Amazon includes: Blu-ray, 2 DVDs, CD and 96 page booklet. Having seen Scorsese's film on cable several times, and a one who deeply appreciates the intelligence and artistry of George Harrison, I find comfort in watching Scorsese's film in Blu-ray version, listening to all of George's music and his perspectives about love, life, music and being. I 'll have the complete set delivered by tomorrow.

    just keeps getting better,
    Richard

The Deluxe Edition set arrived in a very impressive box set packaging. I haven't even opened it yet. Waiting for a block of time to take it all in. Very impressed with the initial presentation. Someone cares enough about the packaging. Of course, the music, film and reading materials matter. I'll get to that tomorrow. Having viewed Scorsese's film several times on cable and eager to watch it again, I know my wife and I are in for a treat. I'll invite some friends over who also appreciate Harrison's body of work, his ideas and his memory.
    All things must pass,
